Hi all I'm currently in the process of building a 460 stroked out to 521ci and going to be installed into a 78 F250 Ranger super cab with a small 4 to 6 inch lift and 35 inch to 37 inch tires. its got 4.10 gears and a C6 tranny that I may swap out to a manual for a tremmec TKO 600 possibly. Im in the process of choosing the cam and am wondering with the lower gears and the stroker motor if i should go with a larger cam. its going to be a daily driver but I would like it to have some serious towing and off road capabilities and still be a big bad fast brick flying down the road. also right now it has vacuum breaks but i would like to possibly upgrade to hydraulic breaks if possible. currently looking at Hydraulic flat tappet cams in crane cams H-272-2 and H-288-2 and comp cams X4270H and XE262H. what would you choose? Its my first Big Build and i believe the big cubic inches will leave my motor possibly wanting that larger cam.
I had a Comp Cams X4262H in my 466. I'm no engine builder, but if I made a 521 I'd put something a little bigger than the X4262H in it just because of the extra cubes and the fact that I probably would put a slightly bigger cam in the 466 if I went back in time to do it again. Take that info for what its worth.
Well I didn't build a 521. just a 460 bored 30 and flat tops and dove heads and all roller (wish I had) But I used comp 4x4 extreme the bigger of the 2 that they had then and loved that thing , worlds of bottom end and did ok on the top
Give the guy at Cam Research Corp a call, he will custom cut one for your application.
I've had a few done by him and I couldn't be happier.
it ended up only being about $60 more than a comp cam and that was broken in and ready to run.
I think either cam would be nice. One variable is compression... what compression ratio are you running? Also heads iron or aluminum. Higher compression can benefit from more cam. If you are around 9:1 or higher with iron heads, I would suggest the 270.
Vacuum assist power brakes should work OK with either cam also.
