I am at the point of my F1 build I need to order mufflers. I have a 302 V8 and mechanic told me to get 2.25 in and out. There are numerous choices in this category and prices range from $30 to $130/muffler. I want a "small foot print" in terms of noise. Your comments would greatly appreciated.
This has been discussed extensively, with a lot of good information, opinions offered.
I would suggest going to the advanced search function and type in 'muffler sound'
or 'muffler noise'....
A "small noise footprint" is in direct proportion to the size of the muffler, and how you contain it's resonance. You can get a muffler with a "Hospital" rating if you wish. I do not know of a "Library" rating.
I’ve experimented for years on bracket race Mopar with various mufflers because of Oregon’s noise regulations. Most of my testing was with full-size passenger car mufflers. I tried 3 inchID shortys and older Corvair turbos. First was too loud second sounded funny, Then Cad sedan Seville which were very quiet but killed 4/10s of ET. Best muffler I’ve ever used was a factory Hemi 70 roadrunner put on at Midas. They ETd the same as 3” race muffs but we’re street legal. The sound was what a V8 should sound like.
I’ve got a 53 Buick super resto mod that I bought with flow masters on it,didn’t sound appropriate so I went to the aforementioned Cadillac mufflers. Nice and quiet now.
Quiet for you or the rest of the world ? Tail pipes on anything keeps most of the noise away from the occupants . I bought stainless Borlas for mine after listening to as many clips as I could . I do like to hear my engines but want the interior noise to be relatively quiet and the complexity of putting tail pipes on mine is prohibitive so I'm hoping they will be ok without .
I am using dual 2.5 inch stainless Magnaflows on mine. I went with 2.5 inch pipes as well. Engine is a 302 with short headers. The reason for the 2.5 and not 2.25 with me is the pipe my local muffler guy uses is a thicker than normal and is aluminum coated. When he bends it in the machine it doesn't wrinkly. It only shrinks in the bends. It looks smooth. So the tighter bends are still at least 2.25 inches. That way its not choked down.

Mandrel bent. Pricey $$$ machines. OEM pipe is that way if you look.
