PATS Key Programming with AE??

Anyone have any experience with programming keys with Auto Enginuity (AE)? I have the instructions for programming new keys but they require you to have 2 working/programed keys. Just bought a 2000 Excursion a couple of weeks ago but unfortunately the Ex only came with one set of keys.....

Hi Stewart - I didn't know either until last week. TARM over at Powerstroke Nation told me about it. I found the area in the software yesterday, but have not completed the task yet. Still waiting on the keys & remotes to show up in the mail.

I followed the same instructions Pete (F250_) listed on his website for changing the tire size. Instead of selecting Anti-Lock Brakes select PATS. pops up and you can format keys and remotes.

I have tried to make keys with AE and have had no luck. This was on a ford focus.

Wow, it actually worked!. I must admit I didn't have much faith that it would.

I followed the same steps Pete (F250_) has outlined on his website in order to change the tire size in AE.

http://www.truck-mods.com/AE%20-%20C...ire%20Size.pdf
,
Put the new cut key in the ignition and turn it to "on" but do not start (it won't anyway since key key has not been programmed yet).

I followed steps 1 through 3 outlined on Pete's website with one exception. In step three when changing/selecting the system - instead on selecting "anti-lock brake", select "PATS" which will show up under "Park Aid".

After the truck connects click on the tab labeled Test OnBoard System (just like in step 4 when changing the tire size).

Next select "allow/enable spare key programming" the timer will start and it will take 10 minutes to gain security access. After the 10 minute timer is up and you can now select program spare key.

AE came back and said programming complete and she fired right up.

Thanks to Pete (F250_) and Tarm on PSN for your help.

So there were some questions about using AE to program the PATS keys. Someone in another post mentioned having issues, so I looked it up and here is what I found, hope it helps you all.

NOTE: The Security Access Procedure is used to obtain passive anti-theft system (PATS) security access. PATS security access must be granted to erase ignition keys, enable/disable the spare key programming switch (PID SPARE_KY) or perform a parameter reset for PATS, and may be required to program ignition keys. The Security Access Procedure invokes an inherent 10-minute time delay prior to granting security access during which the diagnostic tool must remain connected to the vehicle. Once security access has been granted, a security access command menu is displayed which offers various command options (refer to PATS Configuration Command Index).

NOTE: Select only the command required by the appropriate pinpoint test.

From diagnostic tool: Using service card, select PATS. Enter SECURITY ACCESS PROCEDURE. This procedure will take 10 minutes to perform, during which the ignition switch must be in the RUN position and the diagnostic tool must be connected to the vehicle.

After the 10-minute security access procedure has been completed, a new menu will be displayed with command options. Select only those functions required before exiting out of the menu. Once you have exited from the menu, the security access procedure must be performed again to display a new menu with the command options.

NOTE: This procedure is used when a customer needs to have an additional ignition key programmed into the vehicle without erasing stored key codes, but does not have two programmed ignition keys available. This procedure is also useful when attempting to determine if an ignition key is defective, as a new key can be installed without erasing ignition keys or without having two programmed ignition keys available
.

NOTE: Before programming, the new ignition key must have the correct mechanical cut for the ignition switch lock cylinder.

NOTE: If eight ignition keys are already programmed, this procedure will not allow any further keys to be programmed without erasing all stored key codes first. The number of keys programmed into the system can be determined using the PID NUMKEYS.

Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the RUN position using the new, unprogrammed ignition key.
Enter diagnostic tool menu using the Ford Service Function (FSF) card and select PATS. Follow Security Access to obtain security access. For additional information, refer to Anti-Theft Security Access in this section. (text above italicized)
From the diagnostic tool menu, select IGNITION KEY CODE PROGRAM.
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the diagnostic tool.
Start the engine with the new ignition key. The vehicle engine should start and run normally.

Let me know if that works for you

ALmost forgot the cost breakdown:

Got the new blank transponder keys from keyless-remotes.com:

2000 Ford Excursion Keyless Remotes - Keyless Remote & Replacement Keyless Entry Remotes at keyless-remotes.com

$16 each - I bought 2 keys and 2 remotes (remotes ran $25 each).
I had one on the keys cut to match my original at a local locksmith for $2.11.

good to go in my book.....

looks like we posted at just about the same time Ken, thanks for taking the time to look this up. I was actually surprised at how easy the process was.

Now that I have the keys all set I'm ready to get focused/started on the suspension upgrades.........

I am glad to know you can do that with the AE. But it seems like people are having problems with the programming keys for other vehicles. I want to make sure it works for all vehicles before I buy it.

I successfully programmed keys for my 2004 Expedition. My procedure sounds familiar with what woodnthings outlined. It's been a few weeks so I'm not sure.

I did have a bit of a freak out moment. I had been running AE on my Expedition and a buddies 5.4 supercharged F250 most of the afternoon doing some diagnosis for him. I didn't even think about it when I started to program my keys. Got it all finished and went to start the car and nothing. Neither key worked...window wouldn't roll up...nothing. Uh-oh! I left the house for a couple hours to take my son to baseball and thought about it. Got back and it was dark out. Hopped in to try again and noticed the interior lights were very dim. *Lightbulb goes off in my head* Jumped it with my truck and both new keys started it right up. Relief.

Moral of story...heed the warnings...AE WILL run discharge your battery if left plugged in for an extended time.

I tried that procedure on my 2000 expy and still no luck. It would wait the whole ten minits then kick me out of security access cant remember the error it called out.

So instead I just tricked the system now any correctly cut key will get the job done.

With my aftermarket remote start and security I feel safe with it plus Ide steal my non PATS superduty over the expy parked next to it any day.

I think that my old pcm is bad, and when the new one comes, can i do this same thing, and program my original, or blank/new key and just start truck after programming? or is there any issue doing this same operation with different pcm?

thanks in advance and greetings from Finland!
