Sorry for a post that might be repetitive but the symptoms are too specific to search. I've got a 2000 X V10 with 130000mi. I keep getting this clicking type noise from the engine bay. But what's making it hard to search for, is it only happens under load at about 1500rpm. Under load as in going up hill(I haven't towed anything yet so I'm not sure if that will trigger it too). The clicking starts and if I give it the beans it will down shift, jump to 2300rpm and no more clicking. Any ideas what this could be? Doesnt sound like a healthy noise. Also, I don't notice it during normal flat driving, or acceleration af any type, aggressive or conservative.
Maybe not a click, but a ping or knock? Both of those are octane and timing related. Or is it more of a metallic rattle, like a loose heat shield might make?
When was your last spark plug change?
Are all of your exhaust manifold studs/nuts still in place, all 20 of them?
I've only owned the truck for 17,000 miles (about 8-9 months) and haven't changed the plugs yet. Lord knows when the PO did. As for the sound. Click isn't a good description. It's almost like a bogging fluid. Almost like the sound of boiling water if that makes sense. I will be checking the plugs for looseness and the exhaust manifold bolts as soon as I can make the time.
Ps. Sorry for the crappie noise explanations, I'm learning that I don't know how to explain this haha but thanks for helping despite my lack of knowledge
Boggling fluid- ‘Rales are abnormal lung sounds characterized by discontinuous clicking or rattling sounds. They can sound like salt dropped onto a hot pan or like cellophane being crumpled’. Crackles too?
This is is the sound you hear from the drivers seat? Or with the hood open listening as someone cycles thru rpm’s?
This is the sound from the drivers seat. I havent tried to re-create the sound with the hood up and listening. I was able to make the truck do the sound on level ground (much to other drivers dismay, I was going quite slow) but right at 1,300-1,500rpm. Second and third gear.
