Hey am a new owner of a 87 bronco and the fuel gauge is not working when I turn the truck off it goes down when I turn the truck on it tops out..... Can you folks help me trouble shoot this. It is a 5.0. The bronco runs great. just cant read the fuel gauge.
I just repaired mine, its a 87', i end up making a acsess pannle in the floor (idea stolen from another thread) to get to the gas tank, Trust me its much easier than dropping the tank, but the problem with mine was the float, it's a little thin brass canister that snaps into the float arm, and it had a hole in it. so i cleaned it up with a wire brush, took a butane gas torch and solder, and so far it works. Good Luck with yours! DW
Had the same problem with my float. $5 (from Ford) and about and hour of work and I had the tank off and the float replaced. Problem fixed. If your sending unit is the problem you are only looking at about $50 to replace that. Those bolts aren't gonna come off easy though. Make sure you have plenty of torque or pneumatic tools. Once you get those bolts off you should be on your way. Needless to say they go back on a lot easier. A test light should help you diagnose your problem. Disconnect the harness at the top of the tank and use a test light to ground the gauge. When grounded it should peg high and if it does, you know that from the harness to the gauge is good. I would bet that your float is cracked though. Good Luck!
Thanks all I just bought this beast and I have no idea on troubleshooting it. This bronco was hit on the the driver side fender. Could there be a emergency switch I need to switch?
No it runs great. I just have alot of work to do on it. 100% stock Emission light on, fuel gauge not working, radio is stock, I am fixing everything this weekend thanks folks.
unplug the battery cable and depress the brake for about 15sec that should alow the computer to reset. then hook it back up and go for a drive if possible.
