Since I'm a stock guy, if my PVD wheels start peeling or flaking, I'd be happy if Ford replaced them with the standard XLT wheel. I think those look better anyway.
I looked at a used 2017 yesterday that had peeling chrome all the way around the bead on all four chrome 18” wheels. I assumed that since it had been owned by a farmer, he had used metal tools to change tires and had scraped the chrome off, but PVD failure makes more sense. Dealer has since chucked the rims and put on black aftermarket ones.
I don’t know what dodge does but the wheels on my 2016 Ram 2500 are still mint. The ones on my old 2013 gmc had the notorious clear coat lifting/peeling. Can’t wait for the Ford that I order to do this, as long as it doesn’t leak water (gmc) and the tranny doesn’t have seizures (dodge) I’ll be ahead of the game.
All 4 of my 18" PVD wheels are peeling around the bead area. My tires are the original Wranglers...never touched by a tire machine. 19 months...17k miles. I plan to address this with my dealer at the next oil change.

Pictures taken by service manager to send to Ford to get authorization to replace them.
My previous 2015 F 150 had the peeling on the Chrome PVD wheels. All 4 were replaced free because under the 3 year 36,000 bumper to bumper warranty. At that time the service manager said this would be set number 5 they have replaced. Believe it or not but my new 2019 F 250 has the chrome PVD wheels. I guess it’s cheaper to replace them than come up with a new design.
Well add me to the list, just noticed my rims flaking the chrome. Looks like a trip to the dealer to see of they will replace them without to much of a hassle.. I'm at 24k on the odometer.
[...] The Welds on my 2000 F350 are nice but require quite a bit of polishing to stay looking nice.
That takes me back. I had an awesome set of Weld wheels on my 1996 Ford Ranger. Too bad Weld went bankrupt.
My 2006 Explorer with factory chrome wheels had pitting and peeling. My buddy's F150 has factory chrome wheels that pitted and peeled within 2 years. As much as I liked the chrome option, I decided against it based on my experience and what is shown here in this thread. In my region of snow and salt, it just doesn't work.
Real surprised that there aren't anymore reports than there are here recently with the PVD rims.. May want to go out and take a look at yours guys..
I'm disappointed that I have to deal with this issue at 24k on the clock..
By the looks of the wheels, their full of road salt and rusting brake dust, once it penetrates the surface, the battle of corrosion begins. Not Fords fault, its up to you to clean and protect the finishes (if you want). Just like an oil change..........its up to you now (not ford).
Nah, chrome plated wheels should last for many, many years.....at least past the warranty period. I got a set Crager chrome plated wheels in 2000 and they still look good today. Too much kool aid for you.
My 17 250 xlt with the same wheels is doing it and I don’t have 12,000 miles on the clock yet.
Friday I took it in for a replacement headlight, they took pickture of all 4 of my wheels and submitted to ford. I’ll know by next week what they plan on doing.
