I started it up and had the same 'rattle' type sound to it.
I will free up the calipers tomorrow and take her for a ride.
I'll cut open the filter tomorrow and see whats inside.
Did you only change the filter and one quart of oil or did you all the oil.

I was thinking you were trying to figure out what was wrong with it but by just changing the filter and one quart you just wasted both, you need to get all that old oil out of the pan and get fresh oil into the motor.

I don't know what you were seeing in the little bit of oil you got out of it but I don't think it was babbit because the babbit on a bearing is only a couple of thousands thick and then a thin layer of copper before you get into the hard part of the bearing. It takes a oil analysis to detect babbit in the oil. I over heated one motor and had all the bearings down to copper and there was no signs of bearing material in the filter or anywhere else, I had the crank turned and polished to 20/20 and put it back in but I pulled the motor to do it plus it was a motor I built and knew it was in good shape. With a motor with 223K it would be pulled and replaced or rebuilt but before rebuilding I would want it running if could to tell what it's major problems were. I also know what what different parts of the motor sound like when they are going bad but it has to be running.

Ok so thought of the oil filter being plugged was a good idea. I only started the truck once, twice now, to see if the knock is still there.
I changed the oil filter cold and with the truck in place facing down hill.
To change the oil I would get the truck up to operating temperature before draining the oil.
I have not oped the oil filter I took off yet.
I found a piece of 'aluminum' colored metal, about a 1/4 inch long, curled up like it was gouged out, in the pan I used to drain the drain back oil from the oil filter in.

When I was a kid we'd put in 60 weight racing oil and run it till it blows.
I really don't want to do that again.
