Help picking a Tonneau Cover

While I'm waiting for my new F250 to be built, I've been doing tons of research about various things related to it. When I had to pick a tonneau for my RamBox, the choice was easy, the BakFlip G2 was the only one available that fit and didn't look terrible. But with the F250, it seems there's a ton of different options that make narrowing down choices difficult. I'd like to see if I can get some recommendations about which models I should take into consideration.

The truck I have on order is a 2018 F250 CC SRW 6.75 box Lariat 4x4. I'm getting this truck to be able to get into fifth wheel towing, so I've also got a Demco Highjacker Autoslide for the Ford Pucks on order as well. I'm hoping to find a tonneau that won't be a pain while hooking up. I've seen some tri-folds that stack up pretty tall when folded and could possibly block my view of the hitch. I've got the Ultimate camera option ordered, so I should have the CHMSL Camera, but I'm not sure if the nose of the fiver will block that from being a means to deal with thick tonneaus, so I'd rather have something slim enough to make sure I can still see past it if I need to.

In that regards, my Bakflip was good, because it was flush mounted, but there were several things I didn't like about the BakFlip:

1) It would freeze to my tailgate, preventing the tailgate from opening. I learned that one the hard way crossing the border where I got pulled into secondary when they couldn't get the tailgate open. Now I have to make sure I chip away any ice and that the tailgate opens before I cross in the winter, which is a pain I'd rather avoid.
2) One of the latches pulled away from the cover, and no amount of self tapping screws, rivets, or other means of fastening it would work now that it was compromised. It can still latch fully closed, but I can't latch it at that position any more and have to basically open it all the way up against the glass now if I'm opening it more than one fold.
3) The cable pull type latches aren't that robust either, I had to open one of the latches and redo the cable after it let go.

What I did like about it though, was that it was flush mounted, and that it was a hard cover. It snows here in Canada, and I really don't relish the idea of cleaning 4-8" of snow off a vinyl tonneau. I also liked that it folded all the way up against the window if I really needed almost the full length of the bed, which I did quite often. However, with the Demco, I'm not sure if that's going to be the case anymore. Since it weighs so much, I doubt I'm going to be taking it out unless I have a specific need for the bed, in which case I can probably also take off the tonneau for that same need. It's really going to cut down on the "Hey Hun, can we get this?" purchases at Costco.

Because of that, I'm thinking about maybe going with a rolltop instead of a tri-fold, but I'm not familiar with them at all to know how they hold up to things like ice and snow, ease of install/uninstall/reinstall if necessary, etc...

Anybody want to make some recommendations? What kind of tonneau should I be looking at, and of that kind, preference on brand?

Thanks,

Mike

I did the group buy on the Bakflip Revolver X4 ($829). It’s a very nice roll-up cover that won’t interfere with your hitch of your CHMSL camera.

I just got a Bakflip Revolver x4. And I love it. I have a thread about it from a few weeks ago. I have the same bed size as you and took a bunch of pics. Check it out

Good thread. My truck should be here is 11 days (assuming COTUS is right), so my X4 is still in the box. I plan to get LineX also. Looks like the best combination for my situation. Thanks!

Just installed my rolling hard cover by Rev, which is the Bakflip Revolver in disguise. Had the Roll-X on my 2012, which was the original version of the Revolver. I have nothing but good things to say about them.

I'm leaning towards a RetraxPro Mx or some other metal retractable. The flip type tops are less $ but it seems to be much easier to just retract a top than flip it over, and the retractables don't block your view of the hitch.

Sorry to drag up my same old thread, but I still haven't made up my mind about which tonneau to go with. Currently I've narrowed it down to one of these 4 retractable, based on what my local tonneau dealer can get their hands on:

a) Retrax One
b) Retrax Pro
c) Roll n Lock M-Series
d) Roll n Lock A-Series

Does anybody have any additional feedback on these models? Looking for help determining between the Retrax vs Roll n Lock and between the cheaper One/M-Series vs the Pro/A-Series. What's going to hold up better to being a daily driver truck that's parked outside and will get snow on it in the winter that will need to be cleared off? Do I need to up to the aluminum models in that case, or are the cheaper options robust enough to handle a foot of snow?

I have a shortbed ‘18 Superduty. I have ordered from Linex the equivalent of the Bakflip F1 tri fold.
Linex refers to it as their Truck Gear hard Top trifold.
This cover is made by Bakflip for Linex. What’s the advantage? Bakflip offers a 3- year warranty for the F1, whereas like everything else, Linex offers a lifetime warranty for their products. I got a price of $942 plus tax.

I have the Retrax Pro. Absolutely love it. Over the years, on different trucks, I've had RollBak, Pace Edwards, and my dad has a Roll n Lock. I'm not sure what series his Roll n Lock is, but neither he, nor I would ever purchase one of those again. He has not had good luck with it. I liked both the Pace Edwards and RollBak covers, but they weren't as good as the Retrax. I really like the quality of this cover, and it seems like it will last a very long time with the Rollers versus the covers that just slide. I would recommend the Retrax Pro over the others you have on your list.

I appreciate the feedback, Retrax Pro was the way I was leaning based so good to know my instincts were right.

Unfortunately I ended up doing a 180 on myself. Despite not fully loving my Bakflip G2, I couldn’t ignore the offer from Bak for a free BAKBox with the MX4. So I bought one just under the wire for the rebate. Need to call my tonneau dealer back on Monday to schedule the pickup, but the sales been processed.

Also helped that the MX4 was nearly $900 cheaper than the Retrax. I knew the Retrax would be more, but at a combined $1200 difference when you factor in the BAKBox, well, money talks.

Again, thanks for your help everyone. I’ll be sure to post a pic when it’s all installed.

I have a Roll n Lock on my truck. It's my second one and i couldn't be happier. It locks up tight when I want and it opens as much or as little as I need. It's water tight and doesn't leak.

OP...is your 250 a gasser or diesel?

You may have trouble finding a fiver you like if you want to remain legal if you have the 6.7 PSD.

i have the revolver and I love it. Highly secure and reliable.

It’s a gasser. 2840 payload, the fiver is a “1/2 ton towable” (haha, yeah, right). 7400 pounds dry, 1140 pounds dry pin weight. Yeah, I know, dry means nothing, but I haven’t been able to make it to a scale yet. Still, I’ve only added about 1000 pounds, even if 80% of it ends up on the pin, at a 2000 pin weight I should be ok.
