The ScangaugeII is what folks use. It is somewhat outdated (but still a very useful tool) compared to how good and cheap the phone and tablet apps have become. The Scangauge is not very good at reading codes.
Phone and tablet apps:
iPhone: ForScan Lite with an ELM327 WiFi adapter (I have this and like it - it reads codes better than the Torque app)
Android: TorquePro with an ELM327 Bluetooth adapter ( I have this and like it)
Another that I haven't heard much about is DashCommand
I have heard that DashBoss is good as well, just more expensive.
