Codes?

I see posts regarding error codes. How are you able to get these codes? Do you have to buy a special tool? if so what does it cost? and would it besomething worth having?

Thanks

Error codes are read with a specialty tool (scanner) or a re-programmer (Edge, superchips, many more, ect).

Re-programmers will allow you to add a few more HP to your truck in addition to reading the codes. The cost ranges from a couple hundred to 5-600 $ with readouts for EGT (Exhaust Gas Temps) & Boost ect.

If you are going to hang around this site very long you're going to need gages cuz the MOD bug will get you.

Thanks guys. Hey 1997f-350, can you tell me more about this ease scan? Can you change things with it?

Today I just purchased a 1995 F350 c/c 4x4 with a 186,000 miles. I know I'll have that "mod bug" as Cuda speaks of real soon.

nope you cant change things with it. its more of a tool than anything. it just observes all the sensors and lets you run all the pcm tests that ford can do.(injector buzz test, cylinder contribution test, glow plugs etc) also lets you record while driving to see whats going on. also is a code reader.

the kind of code reader that lets you change things is a programmer such as an edge evolution or superchips micro tuner. these also give you more power.

not too sure what route you wanna go with your truck as far as mods and stuff so that should way heavily on your decision of what to buy?

fwiw i read a lot on here to find out what was what and what route i wanted to go before laying down the cash. i suggest this to you. it will save you money in the long run.

i have seen it so many times a person buys a tuner and then regrets it later after they want more power and a specially burned chip. there went a few hundred on a tuner. but the code reader function is still good. kind of a toss up.

does anybody need a code reader/ scan tool? well yeah and no. they come in handy but are not neccesarily needed. a lot of things can be trouble shooted pretty easily on the internet as we have all had a problem at one time or another.

the mod bug bites hard watch out. he has bitten me pretty hard!!!!

Thanks 97. I think the only (that may change) thing I'll do will be the intake and exhaust. But I do like the idea of being able to see the error codes myself, and hopefully be able to save some money by DIY.

I wish! It's a V10 2wd. The wifey unit saw it and had to have it. Probably a good thing cause I wouldn't ever let her drive it if it was.
