I'm pretty sure I'm having injector issues and I'm wondering the best way to proceed.
I currently have 245000 miles on the truck and i don't know if its worth changing the orings out or at this point should I just replace the injectors?
The truck runs fine but cold starts ( 25*F) it idles rough for a couple minutes and there is a LOT of white smoke. Truck starts fine with minimal smoke when plugged in. There is no issue when the truck is warm.
I have also noticed that the engine is louder in general. I did the glow plugs last year.
So what should be my path forward?
My truck is a 2003 and as such it does not have a glow plug relay but a glow plug control module (GPCM). Also the 2003s and the Excursions send an engine code when the GPCM or any of the glow plugs aren't working. I got a code 3 years ago for the GPCM and replaced it then. This is my reasoning as to why it is the injectors and not the glow plugs or relay. I've done some reading about our injectors and one site that I had found said that the common life for the injectors was in the 240000 range, some being much longer and some being much shorter.

Thoughts?
I do not believe that all 2003's came with a GPCM, I believe that it's a Kalifornia truck, they all had them as did the Excursions. If you're rich you could go for new injectors. If you'd rather not sped the money you could try shimming your injector poppets. There are kits sold on fleabay and it's a relatively cheap and easy way to go. Your symptoms sound like good candidates for a shim kit.
I had similar problems with my 2000 and about the same mileage. My choice was to rebuild my stock injectors. The truck has been running fine and quieter ever since, starts at 15 degrees with just one cycle of the glow plugs and current gets 16+ mpg.

Mark, I don't think my truck is from California. It has no emission equipment on it and I'm pretty sure that it is the stock exhaust. Is there a way to know for sure?
I haven't heard of shimming them. Can you point me to some info on that please?
Jim, when you say you rebuilt them, do you mean changed all the orings? Or is there more that can be done?
Here's an example of a kit, there is a page full of options on fleabay. A couple of guys here have done the job and reported excellent results. I can't tell you how to tell if your truck is a Kalifornia truck or not, do you have a steel, rear mounted fuel tank by any chance? The chassis trucks all had GPCM's too. OOOps, forgot link.
From what I understand the California trucks have a Glow Plug Control Module rather than a relay. It is meant to provide individual glow plug control as opposed to all on and all off.
When you go through the rebuild thread you will see there are other parts like springs and crush washers that come in the kit. I tried to show and explain each step including the shimming process.
Thorough cleaning or the injectors, especially the tips and o-ring grooves is critical. I used a spray can of carb cleaner and inserted the plastic tube into the injector tip, then sprayed cleaner through it to make sure all the ports were open.
Jim, that is hardcore what you did there. I don't know if I'm able to do that....I really have no where to do that kind of work. I have no shop, a bench or even a vise! I would literally have to do that job on the tailgate of my truck and I don't think that its a good idea. About how long did it take? I do like the price of it though.
Sous, you are right on both accounts. It is a picture of Jesus holding up a man who has a hammer in his hand. The idea being conveyed is that even though Jesus was crucified to pay for our sins, he is willing to carry you and uphold you in your times of need. In one word I guess it could be summed up in forgiveness.
Thank you for the question.

Understood and thank you for the quick reply to my question. It makes sense now, stay safe out there.
