So everybody says to have the dpf filter screen added to the dash gauges. I went and looked at a few trucks yesterday, scrolled thru the options on the diesel truck just to see if it was there
by chance and it wasn't. Sales person knew nothing about it.
I was given a '2018 build guide' if you want to call it that.
Looking thru it one of the options under functional section is
Operator Commanded Regeneration (OCR) - 98R- and apparently is a option for XL and XLT but when you get to the Lariat it just has a '-' in the column and I dont even see it listed for the KR, platinum or limited.
In the pricing guide it shows as a 250.00 option.
Confusion sets in.
Some say they have the dealer turn it on as part of the deal. But
If I order a truck, I need to order this 98R pkg in order to be able to do a OCR, and get the screen to show up.?
and if its a 'lot' truck, if it doesnt show as a option on the window sticker then OCR is out of the question as is the screen?
Or does this 98R pkg just allows you to see the screen?
And its only available on XL and XLTs. ?
The $250 option is for doing a manual regen and, I believe is only available on "work" trucks, XL and XLT. The DPF screen is informational only, but enabling it is done by enabling Forced Regeneration in the Personality Parameters in the PCM via IDS or FORScan.
If you don't want to mess with FORScan take the steps to the dealer and say "here's where it is". I wanted my DRLs shut off, dealer said they didn't know how to do it. Printed out the FOREScan process and said "here". They did it no problem.
The reason you are getting confused is because when using ForScan or IDS to enable the DPF% screen in the productivity display the option that needs enabling is Operator Commanded Regeneration = Enable. Doing so does not allow an OCR on the upper trim level trucks, it only enables the DPF screen that is disabled by default.
Can the upper trim level trucks have a module installed to allow the operator to manually start a regen?, somebody that knows more about this feature will have to answer that question.

You don't need a module. An Edge Insight CTS/CT2 or FORScan will do the job. My filter went full a few days ago and I had only 5 mile round trips on the schedule that would end just as a regen started. I parked in my driveway and started a manual regen with the CTS. 20-25 minutes later, I had a clean DPF.

I understand a OCR can be done with a tuner or FORScan. What I don't understand is how the XL trucks have the ability but the lariat and above do not. Are the upper trim level trucks missing a piece of hardware that makes this possible in an XL truck or is it strictly software? If it was software, why wouldn't FORScan be able to add this feature to the upper trim level trucks?

Ford considers the XL and XLT to be work/fleet trucks. Many of the work/fleet trucks do a lot of low speed or stop and go driving. Ford offered the OCR option more so for fleet vehicles such as UPS, telephone, power company trucks, etc. These do a lot of idling.
The Lariat and above are not considered work/fleet trucks and were not given the ability to do OCR.
I suspect there is code in the ECM/PCM that identifies what trim level the truck is by the VIN that prevents the OCR.

Good explanation except for the last sentence. I doubt there is anything that prevents OCR on Lariats and above, just that Ford decided the on dash option would not be an option on those. It would be nice if someone who has done an OCR (operator commanded regen) on a Lariat or above with FORScan or CTS would chime in to confirm.
And a correction to a previous post, the Edge Insight line is monitor/diagnostics only and is not a tuner. The Edge Evolution line is the tuner.
