Column shift collar removal

Guys, I have a 1980 F100 with a 3spd column shift. I need to remove the shifter collar to replace it. I have looked and only found videos on removing the steering wheel and replace the blinker cam. I have the steering wheel off and the internal parts of the steering housing removed. However, there is a thick gauge rod going up the steering column to the last part still in the steering housing. I am not sure how to disconnect this part.

Are there any videos on how to remove the shifter collar? Can anyone recommend please?

PS, there is a part in the steering wheel housing that has a spring in it, unfortunately the spring shot out and I cannot find it. Can I get this spring at a parts store?

Thanks....Jeff

Jeff,

That thick gauge rod you're referring to actuates a switch at the lower end of the steering column...when you turn the key tumbler, it pushes the rod downwards. You have to remove the two nuts holding the switch on the column, and then the rod will release.
The ignition housing is held on to the steering column with two T-bolts. Remove (or just loosen) the two nuts, then you can move the t-bolts enough to lift the housing off the column.

The worst part of that whole job imho is getting the roll pin out of the shift handle/lever in the collar.

I'm not sure what spring you're referring to, but one of the other guys might.

I just rebuilt my 3-spd column last fall, so I remember most of the parts, but not the spring you're talking about, sorry.

Rembrant, thanks for the quick reply. I do see the end of the rod goes to what I believe you are talking about. I will attempt to remove/loosen the T-bolts you mentioned and see if that helps me out.

The spring sits in a hole with a metal rod that pushes through and has a c-clip on the end. You remove the blinker cam and it's in the picture of the video you sent. The metal pin about 12:00 in the picture of the video. The spring is behind that metal pin.

Thanks....Jeff

Are there any videos on how to remove the shifte collar? See parts catalog pic below.

Can I get this spring at a parts store? No.

The only spring I see in the pic is shown as basic part number: 3F532 > > Ford part number: D1FZ-3F532-A .. Steering Column Lock Actuator Lever Spring / Obsolete

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 3 = 800-543-4959.

NOS PARTS LTD in Waxahachie TX has 5 = 972-937-2201.

EOTZ-7228-D .. 3 M/T Shift Collar / Obsolete - 1980/86 F100/250; 1980/87 E100/350 (Econoline).

Ford obsoleted it several years ago, no one has any NOS .. AFAIK, no auto parts store has it either.

One member of this forum said that the 1978/79 F100/250 & E100/350 3 M/T collar (D9TZ-7228-C replaced D8TZ-7228-A) will work, but it needs to be slightly modified.

There are 14 of this collar available NOS .. and it may have been reproduced.

Click on the pic twice to enlarge it, then use the cursor to move it around.

There is a member on here that has a few NOS of the original Ford 80-86 collars, and he may sell one or two of them. If you search the old 3 on the tree threads you will find him. He purchased the last 4-5 of them available in one shot. I was going to buy one myself, but since I'm switching to a 5spd it really didn't make much sense.

Myself, and several other have used the '79 collar with minor modifications. They're available aftermarket...Dorman or one of those type companies makes them and they're all over Ebay. The plastic bushings for the collar are still available NOS on Ebay, but rarely by the 80-86 part numbers.

The long steel shift tube seems to be the most difficult part to find a replacement for if one needs to do so.

Hey Number, I realized you said “plastic bushing for the collar.” Is this the bushing that goes where the shifter goes into the collar?

Here's a picture of my 1984 collar when removed. You can see the crack...mine was split down both sides like that. After a little while like that, the simply break completely off. There are plastic bushings on each end of the collar, and they disintegrate after a while. The collar gets loose/sloppy, then starts to bind up, and then you start pushing it harder, and then it cracks. If ever there was a relic of the past...the 3 on the tree column was it.

When you look at the parts drawing above, you will see parts # 7335, one below the collar, and one above it. They're both different. The lower one is white, and has a spring washer on top of it (#7C228 on the drawing), and the upper one is black plastic. These bushings wear out as the collar rotates during shifts.

Those plastic bushings seem to still be on Ebay quite often...both the upper and lowers...mostly listed as being for Granada's, and older sedans, etc.

The spring washer should be replaced with the lower bushing as well...not sure what the correct part number is for the 80-86 F trucks, but it should be the same as this guy:

Otis is lookin' good Number Dummy! Our two Bassets are now 7 and the other is almost 10. Big teddy bears.
