Question Steering colum collar

Well, I broke the steering colum collar shifter(what even the actual term is), and now I can't put my truck in park or neutral to start it. I can move it freely from PRND21 with ease, and the linkage in the engine bay is all good.
I was wondering what would be needed and how involved it would be to fix this.

Would really appreciate detailed responses if possible.

your best bet would be to replace the entire steering column(same year)from a salvage yard, as opposed to tearing it apart and replacing the part that's broken . just my 2 cents worth. the column has wiring connections to pull aprt, 4 bolts up against the floor, a few more under the dash on the brace, and the bolt holding the steering shaft to the steering box. or identify what part(s) are broken and replace them thru LMC truck. as an example, their shift collar wo/tilt is about 60 dollars. cam repair kit is about 15 dollars. or try one of our sponsors on the left of the screen. to tear the column apart requires a steering wheel puller which a parts store could borrow or rent.

Is this a tilt or non-tilt column?

The non-tilt column shifter collar can be replaced without removing the entire column from the truck.
The tilt can't.

What year is the truck and as Dennis asked, does it have tilt. A non-tilt column is about a $30 - 2 hour repair. Assuming it's a non-tilt you need the shifter collar. I would also get the rubber grommet for the shift arm while you are doing it. Jeff's Bronco Graveyard is a good source for these parts new.

To replace you need to pull the wheel, remove the turn signal switch. Remove the collar, tranfer the shift arm to the new collar and reinstall. You may need to adjust the neutral safety switch when you are done.

Sorry I forgot to say this.
77 F-100 no tilt, no cruise, an C4.

OK is the collar the whole thing that needs to be replace, because I can kind of see that the actual selecter inside is broke in two(what is this called) ? Would I just have to replace that with out pulling the whole colum, or should I put in a new collar and remove colum?
Sorry I forgot to mention year, ect..

Usually what fails it this:

http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-...t%20collar&sy=

It comes with a new gear indicator. It's also a good idea to order this:

http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/i-..._1966_-_77.htm

It goes under the shift arm. Usually the orignal is dried out.

These parts can be replaced with the column in the truck.
If you have the time and money go this route, but you have to remove the column for this:

Thanks for all the links, I'm having trouble getting to the colum collar. From what I understand there are some wires I have to pull through the colum, how am I suposed to do this and what should I disconect to pull them through.
Sorry for all the questions, but I've never done any of this before.

my previous post was for removing the entire column, which in our local junk yard, is like 5 to 10 dollars. If you read about the wires in my previous post, that was removing the whole column also. Only wire in the way of the steering wheel end coming apart would be the horn(two wires I think)and the gear selector light. my lmc catalog shows broken down diagrams of all the steering column parts, with each labeled and priced. It was only a reference. Jeff's bronco graveyard may have what yer looking for for a bit cheaper.

I belive it was just the steering collar that broke, and I bought a new one and a new rubber bushing too, I hope I don't have to much trouble trying to put everything back.
Thanks for the help so far.
Just asking where is the nuetral safty switch and should I adjust it, or do I need to?

neutral safety switch is on the left side of the transmission...not in the way. Also the turn signal switch should slide off with out a problem. forgot to mention that in my last post. otherwise like what 76 supercab said.

steering colum collar

i to am in the middle of replacing the collar on my 1974 ford f-250. non-tilt. i'm having problems with the removal of the bearing on the steering shaft.-----my question is--do i need a pully to remove this bearing or has time just froze it to the shaft. my thoughts were to tap in down a little futher to release the "hold"?. i did remove the keeper---any answers out there?? thanks, bobby

I just pulled, and it came out, but it got to the point of me worring about braking it, so there might be a better way.(also make sure the wires at the bottom of the colum are completly free.

The neutral saftey switch on a 77 is not on the tranny

It is on the column towards the bottom of the tube.
