just got back from a 16 hour trip picking up a boat, truck performed fine for the entire trip. Once back, I left the truck idling in the road for 15-20 minutes while I cleared space in the driveway and went I went back to the truck it had a very loud, obvious knocking sound. The sound was not there at all when I got out of the truck...I would have noticed it, it’s LOUD. The sound changes in severity with engine RPM’s. No recent oil changes, Currently at 7,000 miles since last change with rotella T-6. I test oil regularly on 5,000 mile intervals with no evidence of excessive metal content in oil. Any ideas what it could be? Don’t think it’s a rod or valve knock bc of how quickly it started...clogged injector, EGR valve issue? I was getting about 6.5 mpg with the boat hooked up, so I didn’t miss many gas stations along the trip, one station had very slow pumps like maybe the pump filters were clogged?? ...bad fuel?
I’m really hoping it’s not a major engine failure, any advice is appreciated.

That doesn't sound right at all. I tow a 15K pound fifth-wheel and have never had fuel mileage that low.
How big, wind load, and heavy is this boat? I agree 6.5 sounds off, unless it is some small yacht the size of a barn. Can you capture video of the sound?
Changed oil to see if anything was in the pan...nothing. Also put some fuel treatment in with a fresh tank of diesel. Knocking got significantly quieter...assumed it was a clogged injector that was clearing up. Was on my way to local diesel shop to have them check it out still when i got one very LOUD knock and the engine started running rough and lost most of the power...then before I could find a place to pull over and shut her down...the motor locked up.
It’s a 2012, 125k miles so no warranty. She currently sits at the Ford diesel shop and I’m awaiting inspection...any common factory issues that could lead me to get some post-warranty help from Ford?
