I am going to be replacing my outer axle seals this weekend and though it would be a good time to open up my diffs and see how they look/replace fluid. What fluid is best? Is Amsoil good? Do the diffs use gaskets, or just rtv? Thanks for the input.
Rear axle seals? Be sure to check the dust/backing plate. These are prone to rusting out pretty quickly if you live where they are throwing salt on the roads. New ones (Usually Dorman is the only brand available for a decent price) will begin to rust in a year. The emergency brake pad assy. will rust out too, lock up, and cause the inner hub seal to fry. Usually this is found the hard way. Hardest part of the whole hub rebuild is getting the rotor to release because of corrosion. I use a bolt through the brake hardware mounting holes to apply enough pressure on the rear of the rotor and it POPS off. No, wait. the hardest part is messing with the emergency brake cable -- POS!
A Washington victim (Joined The Chapter Yet?) Anyway the RTV needs to be the
type that will resist the gear oil. That stuff will eat through the regular RTV is a short time.
The Ford TA-30 is the stuff that the dealer used and you can use stuff like Permatex®
Gear Oil RTV Gasket Maker if you like and want to save some $.

When talking about axle seals I was referring to the front outer seals. I found these were bad when I did my brakes last weekend. I have the new seals and will be putting them on this weekend. Thanks for the information.
