Adjusting Point Gap

I have searched all over for clear guidance on how to adjust ignition points on a Ford 223 and couldn't find anything that explained it clearly. This evening I will be checking the existing gap to determine if I need to make an adjustment. Understand the gap check/adjustment is made when the point block is at the cam lobe's highest part. However, I am not clear as to which screw needs to be turned for gap adjustment. I would be very grateful if someone could give me a play-by-play as to what I need to do. Many thanks. Steve

There are two screws holding the points plate down to the distributor. Loosen the pivot screw just a little, so the points plate can pivot on it. Loosen the adjuster screw (in slot of points plate) about the same. Put a screwdriver in the two adjustment slots to pivot the plate to increase or decrease the gap. Tighten the adjuster screw first, then the pivot screw, and re-check your gap.

Turn engine so that distributor will be on high side of cam.

I prefer to tighten the pivot screw first. It helps hold the points in place while tightening the adjuster screw. If you do the adjuster screw first with the pivot screw not tight, the tension on the the point plate from the adjuster screw can (and usually) moves the points changing your gap.

Granny, the Op said he knew he needed the follower on the high point of the lobe , this the quote from his post."the gap check/adjustment is made when the point block is at the cam lobe's highest part"
