New old guy!

Greetings, I'm back after a long hiatus from this site. Old 7.3 guy that recently upgraded/updated to an 05 F350 CCLB 4x4 Lariat with the 6.0. For the moment it's all stock, 107,800 miles. It's quite the learning curve trying to figure out what makes the 6.0 tick (or stop ticking in some instances) after about a decade of being a 7.3 owner. Thanks to knowledge gained by scanning the forums before making a purchase, I'm already getting the ball rolling to have the EGR and oil coolers replaced, rebuilt FICM and coolant filter installed and a couple other little issues addressed. I got a good enough price on the truck that I'm not that upset about having to do what is basically routine maintenance to ensure she doesn't go boom on me. It will be a family hauler/trailer tugger so I'm not going to get too wild with it, and since I got it with a warranty it's going to have to stay pretty vanilla for a while. I still love my 7.3 but this 6.0 is quickly winning me over for sure.

Do you know if the upgrades below have been installed:
One piece HPOP discharge fitting that replaces the STC fitting
Upgraded dummy plugs
Upgraded standpipes
Upgraded fuel pressure regulator (blue) spring

IMO these are pretty important along with getting gauges to watch critical parameters (starting with oil and coolant temps to assess the health of your oil cooler).

If you are replacing the EGR cooler, I would HIGHLY recommend the BulletProofDiesel EGR cooler.

Welcome to the dark side ....it's an addictive engine.

Mark has some really good points..........now about that profile pic
Love the OBS but we need to see the new steed at some point

They don't have emissions testing in WA do they?
Might even think about deleting the EGR cooler

From your post count looks like you were pretty active on the 7.3 boards. Welcome . Like Navastarnut stated my first move would be a monitoring device if you don’t already have one. ForScan or Toque Pro would be my suggestion. DashBoss and ScanGauge are great for monitoring but not great for reading DTC’s. Again Welcome.

I'm not sure if those upgrades have been installed or not, were they covered under a recall notice? It's going to the dealer next week to take care of one open recall. I'm currently running Torque Pro for monitoring until I can swing an Edge CTS Pro. Glad I am too, I have delta's of 30-40° which is why it's headed to a friend of mine who's a certified mechanic to get the EGR and oil coolers replaced. I bought a service contract with the truck so it's all going to be covered under warranty. EGR cooler will be replaced with either the Bulletproof cooler or the one from IPR Research.

I was wondering how long it would take someone to ask for a pic Here she is:

WA has emissions testing in certain counties, but not the one I live in. However, since it is covered under a warranty I don't think the EGR delete would fly, which is why I'm looking at upgraded EGR coolers along with a coolant filter. Plus, from what research I have done it seems that with the EGR cooler in place combustion temps are lowered slightly and it might actually be a better setup for towing, which will be this truck's primary job.

Haha yes I was quite active in the OBS and 7.3 forums for many years. Already running Torque Pro on an old phone of mine until I can upgrade to something a little better.

I would highly recommend the BPD EGR cooler over the IPR research. IMO IPR has had quite a few documented quality control issues.

Good to know, I hadn't heard that yet.

Make sure you maintain your fluids and filters RELIGIOUSLY or you will be replacing injectors, HPOP or clogging your oil cooler. Motorcraft only on filters. No Ford Gold coolant, go with ELC to keep your oil cooler happy. Fumoto valves on your oil pan, block drains and radiator are nice if you do your own maintenance.

The plan is to replace all fluids/filters in short order, that way I know exactly what I'm working with since the truck didn't come with any maintenance history. It looks to be well cared for mostly, but you just never know.

Would strongly consider running a good 5W40 synthetic. Lot's of folks in this crowd tend to lean that way, more so in cooler climates. Some guys way down south won't because it can get really hot for extended periods, but then some do as well.
Looks like your area can get a bit chilly in the winter, you would be a good candidate.

I run Schaeffer’s synthetic 15w40 and it is great. Still looks decent after 3500 miles but I change it anyway. No sense in compromising motor lubrication to try to stretch an oil change.

I don't think an EGR delete would affect a warranty and would be better for the truck in the long run. Also can't see the Photosuckit pic.

3500 miles on Schaeffers? Good grief that's gotta get expensive. The entire purpose of synthetics is for extended drain intervals dontcha know?

I’m not ruining a $1200 HPOP, injectors or anything else to stretch my oil changes! I know a guy (actually a moderator on here) that recently had his super modified 6.0 crap out after going along with Schaeffer’s recommendation on running their oil over 5,000 miles. Not for me. I ran Motorcraft when my HPOP died which may have just been a weak point anyway but I still changed to synthetic. It’s not a daily driver so it’s not like I’m doing ten oil changes a year.
For those super spread out deltas you can remove the oil cooler cap and stick a 3/4” OD hose in there and backflush it to hopefully regain some cooling capacity.
