I have a 1986 Ford F150 with 300 six cylinder. approximately 140,000 miles. I have sheared the pin in the distributor twice inthe last year. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Could it be that the oil pump is stiff?? Is it the cam?? Thanks, Kent
Sorry guys, I should have given more information...good ideas though. The oil pump and engine are bone stock with about 140,000 miles. When the first pin sheared, the distributor did feel worn out so I replaced it with a rebuilt distributor. Then the pin on the rebuilt distributor sheared off a couple months after. I'm just kind of waiting for it to happen again. Could it be the cam walking back and forth?
I'm with mrit. I think it's your oil pump getting ready to go out. I too had this problem with one of my trucks and replaced the dist 3 times before I finally replaced the oil pump.
Next time, when you pull your dist, and the oil pump's driveshaft is still in place, put a socket and extension on it and see if the pump is hard to turn by hand or if it has hard spots in it. You have to have patience in doing this, however. It could take a few turns to really get the feel of it.
