I just tried to change the fuel filter on a 06 f150,followed instructions that were posted here, but could not get fuel line off of filter. Now I have another problem, the service engine light is on(wasn't prior).Any suggestion for either of these would be greatly appreciated!

I was afraid to push to hard,in case I broke something. The instructions on this forum said that it shouldn't take too much force to get the tool in.

I don't remember which end it was but there was one that was a real pain to get off....I thought I was going to break the tool before it finaly hit the sweet spot and came off....

I don't know if you have a Superchips programmer or one like it but they read DTC trouble codes and also clears them. It comes in handy but they are expensive. I got my Superchips Flashpaq on Ebay for $200.
If I remember correctly with my 05', it does help to have three hands. Really though, the filter should be tight in the bracket so with one hand have the tool over the line(I believe the bigger of the two ends on the tool). With the other hand push the line toward the filter to take up any slack, push the tool toward the line connection kinda hard and you should feel it sink in and/or a click, pull the line away from the filter with the tool in place and it should come off. I'm sure you have it off by now, just thought I would give my history with the filter. I've done my 3 times now.
A couple of questions:
1. How often should the filter be changed, I normally run Top Tier gas and injector cleaner at least at every oil change.
2. Can the tool be bought at most auto parts stores and what is approx. cost.
3. Are there precautions/preperations that need to be done first to prevent gas from going everwhere?
I have never changed my own filter, always had it done by the dealer or mechanic. Last one ran $120.00 to do it about 1 year ago. Would like to do it myself if I don't have to take a gas bath!
I had my transmission flushed and a new fuel filter installed for $170.00. I thought that was a pretty good deal. The fuel filter change by itself was $50.

1. normal operating conditions every 30,000. Fuel cleaner wont help with the dirt that gets picked up and trapped in the filter.
2. Yes most auto parts carry them, bought a plastic set for $8.00.
3. Let my truck sit overnight removed gas cap then put it back on. When I removed the lines only a dribble came out.
