I live in Kent, Wa anyone in this area have advise on who does the best work on the IDI Diesels. Resonable of coarse its an old truck worth maybe 3 or 4k
ah youre just out of my reach bro haha. i have helped out more than a few idi and early stroke diesel owners here on the island. just did injectors, valve covers, and return line kit for a guy with 93 idi turbo. Doesnt seem to be many but i am guessing if they are good with idi's, they wont be found with an online search. It will be a hole in the wall mech with the good tools for the jobs. not some puke from ford telling idi owners that they need three hours labor for a timing job and the ip is timed out of the truck. sheesh!
i live in Black Diamond WA and my best advise is to do it your
self..no one that i have takin my truck to seemed to do it right
This truck is actualy sitting in Black Diamond near that fancy Latte stand on Aub Black Diamond road. But I live on West Hill Kent and my research tells me your correct I just may have to tackle this project myself.
with this site, one thing i have learned is that with the right tools and a willingness to get in and get dirty, you can do anything on your truck. What are you up to?
I basicly inherited the truck its been sitting for a long time. I got it running again with a good battery but not very well it stalls when excelerating and I get alot of grey smoke. It idles fine. The injectors seem to be leaking not suire where but pools up on the intake manifold. It hasn't been seviced for a year and a half and it was not running well when it was parked. I was thinking of putting new injectors and changing the fuel filter.
defnintely try some diesel kleen and a new fuel filter. For this purpose, get two bottles. Fill the new fuel filter, install, put the other bottle in the tank, start it and let it run for about 20-30 seconds. shut it off and let it sit overnight. Start it in the am and do what you can to drive it like a raped ape, as they say on the interwebs. If that doesnt work, i would go for the injectors. How are the gp's?

glow plugs tested ok and I have good output from the Shrader valve on the fuel filter. Do you use a wrench like for oil filter removal to remove fuel filter? can I get Diesel kleen at the parts store?
diesel kleen is at most auto parts store, walmart, etc. The filter is easily removable with something like an oil filter wrench but i bought the rubber belt one called a gator grip. Way easier and fits any filter made, not like the metal ones that only fit a small range. Hope you know what i mean. If you cant find diesel kleen, howes meaner power kleener works like a champ too. The diesel kleen you will be looking for is in the silver bottle. Oh and i have heard seafoam motor treatment will do just the same, some dont like seafoam because it shows them just how much is wrong with their system but you decide. Seafoam will show you leaks where leaks didnt used to be so i wouldnt recommend it to someone to use in their oil. In the fuel though, cleans well!
Yes an oil filter wrench or other strap wrench will work on the fuel filter.
Yes Diesel Kleen should be available at the parts store.
The pooling of fuel you see by the intake is most likely the injector return lines. Its been covered endlessly... do a search to find out how to replace them. (or at least the o-rings)
I would recommend the diesel kleen and new filter and see how it runs. If it perks up, then fix the return lines. Otherwise, wait on the return lines until (if) you replace the injectors, as they need to be removed then anyways. (will keep you from doing it twice).
And I'll put another vote in for do it yourself. Its not that hard, most everything you'll need can be found by searching the forum here, or other online places. Plus its a good hobbie.
Is there anybody good on the South Island that you know of ? I don't know enough about diesels to tell if a guy is good or is just talking. Starting to get a better idea reading the posts here though
What do you need man? I dont mind helping people out if it is a minor to moderate repair, i dont overhaul engines is what i mean haha. As far as reliable diesel mechanics, wilson and proctor do "good work" if you have 100+ per hour for their labor. No one on the island does rebuilds of IP's but i bet wilson and proctor would be the only people or one of a few that could rebuild a engine like ours on the island, or at least south island. Let me know what you want to do, best part about coming up to the international house of pain(my garage) lol, i will show you how to do it so you can do it next time, been doing it since i got my truck all figured out haha.
