1953 F100 Project

I'm new to Fords so I figured I'd jump on here and post a build thread, look for info and ask some questions. I've pretty much always built 1960s GM trucks and muscle cars, but did a 66 Galaxie for my buddy a while back. It is a beautiful car, so when it came time for me to build myself a truck, I decided to build a Ford.

So far I've gotten it blasted, replaced all the rot. Ended up being swiss cheese after blast, so I've got floor pans, rockers, cab corners, lower door skins, and basically a whole new bed. I've begun boxing the frame and tacked in a Mustang II front suspension and a triangulated 4 link to hold the shortened 8.8 rear. I'm at the stage now where it's time to drop in the engine and start burning all this stuff in for good. I've got a Blueprint 408 stroker on the way.

One of my first questions is, it's my understanding that the issues with running headers on these trucks is the steering box clearance. Since I'm running rack and pinion, does anyone know if something like a Hooker comp or super comp will go in withouit too much trouble?

Welcome to FTE, I don't know about the headers but someone else will. I'm guessing you will have clearance issues with the original bell housing mount crossmember and your transmission. Your progress so far looks first rate!!

I'm putting an AOD in it, so that crossmember will most likely be replaced by a fabricated one. I also imagine I'll be modifying the trans tunnel. I'll find out soon.

Thank you for all the kind words.

Once I got the suspension tacked in and the body set on the frame, I measured for and ordered some custom offset wheels, Salt Flats from American Racing. Doing 4" tubs in the bed and filling up the fender wells with virtually no room to spare. 20x10 in the back and 18x9 up front.

Unless you really push it back you shouldn't need to modify the trans tunnel . I have a 408-aod combo but have a flat out c4 vette front and rear so header clearance for me would be different , but moving your engine a bit to the right a bit really helps .

That's good to hear. I hope that's the case. I'm over the metal work, ready to get this thing rolling.
