Toyota and Nissan are coming on with their own trucks but you have to take a look at how long they have been making them. For Toyota and Nissan its not nearly as long as Ford. They may have a few good cars but I don't think thier trucks are something that is going to get good for a little while. They pretty much slapped to of their 4 bangers together and gave it DOHC's so you decide but I would as well as many others to buy or lease the Ford, you won't regret it!
-Toyota has a 6year/60K mile powertrain, Ford 3year/36K.
-the Toyota V-8 is a Lexus engine and not "slapped" together

Aside from those items, the Big3 make stronger trucks for hauling/towing without a doubt.

My '01 4Runner has over 40K miles without a squeak, rattle, problem, or issue. Have only had to put gas ito it and change the fluids.......so I do like Toyota's quality. But my next full size truck will be either a Ford or Dodge since the Tundra won't do what I need it to.

I hate to have to admit it but it's a "fact" not just my opinion. The American vehicles have more interesting designs and features in many cases though. Also they sell many more trucks but you'll definately be at the dealership more times over the life of the vehicle "on average" than with a (From our guidelines: Do not post mean-spirited, vulgar, obscene, sexually explicit, racial epithets, harassing, abusive, hateful, libelous, expletives, derogatory or defamatory words or phases, in any variation.) <!-- jap --> vehicle. I really like my F-150 for many reasons but who knows what the future holds with it trouble wise. The initial build quality is crap. Sure there are bound to be several American trucks with "0" problems but after all there should be some with as many as they sell, but those who brag loudly about American quality are the vocal minority. You're fooling yourself. The looks of the Tundra are terrible though. The new front end is real ugly.

I think you're going to find they aren't the minority and you're pulling your facts out of thin air. How many have you known? I've seen, oh, hundreds of thousands come by the site in the last several years and I have facts backing me up:

JD Powers and Associates:
2003 Ford F150 XL REGULAR CAB - overall quality 5 of 5, mechanical quality 5 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Ford F150 XLT REGULAR CAB - overall quality 5 of 5, mechanical quality 5 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Ford F150 SVT LIGHTNING REGULAR CAB - overall quality 5 of 5, mechanical quality 5 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Ford F150 XL SUPER CAB - overall quality 5 of 5, mechanical quality 5 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Ford F150 XLT SUPER CAB - overall quality 5 of 5, mechanical quality 5 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Ford F150 LARIAT SUPER CAB - overall quality 5 of 5, mechanical quality 5 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Ford F150 KING RANCH SUPER CAB - not enough sales to rate
2003 Ford F150 XLT SUPERCREW CAB - overall quality 5 of 5, mechanical quality 5 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Ford F150 LARIAT SUPERCREW CAB - overall quality 5 of 5, mechanical quality 5 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Ford F150 HARLEY-DAVIDSON SUPERCREW CAB - not enough sales to rate
2003 Ford F150 KING RANCH SUPERCREW CAB - overall quality 5 of 5, mechanical quality 5 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5

2003 Toyota TUNDRA SR5 ACCESS CAB - overall quality 4 of 5, mechanical quality 4 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Toyota TUNDRA LIMITED ACCESS CAB - overall quality 4 of 5, mechanical quality 4 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5
2003 Toyota TUNDRA REGULAR CAB - overall quality 4 of 5, mechanical quality 4 of 5, body and exterior quality 3 of 5

So, your "facts" must come from some other dimension because they certainly don't apply to Earth. The Tundra is a lower quality rated vehicle in every build configuration in both mechanical and overall quality. Take a good look at who's being fooled and wonder why Ford is still #1 when Toyota has a had a full size truck for several years with hardly a dent in the market. Ford simply builds better trucks, in more confirgurations, with more power on the low end (where a truck needs it) for less money with lower repair costs. And the build quality I've seen is even higher on the new 2004 F150. The pre-production trucks I drove were incredible, and pre-production trucks typically have lower quality than the actual production vehicles.

The only place the Tundra really shined is in the initial dealership experience and Ford really needs to get its act together to pressure dealers to not treat customers as targets. (Then again, when you overprice a vehicle as much as the Tundra....)

Thumbs down

Tom B,

While I agree with some of your sentiments I feel I should tell you that if you respect their products please show enough respect for the people not to use such an offensive term to refer to them.

Sorry all! I wasn't thinking. No offense meant to anyone. I didn't even read all the above posts; if I had I would of realized it'd already been touched on. I don't post much and frankly haven't read the rules yet.
Webmaster-
Get real. Too much caffeine? I drive a Ford truck too and like it a lot.
The issue is quality though. Real quality.
You appear to believe that JD Powers is the sole supplier of all the known correct facts. That's like saying the Motor Trend truck of the year winner is really the best. It's a bunch of crap. I want objective opinions not some emotional tirade. I'd believe Consumer Reports before JD Powers. Or go to Epinions to get consumer feedback. I do believe that the Americans are capable of making a superior product if they choose to, they just don't choose to.

Okay... here you go...
Epinions:
2003 Ford F150 SuperCrew: 5 stars
2003 Ford F150 SuperCab 4WD: 5 stars
2002 Ford F150 SuperCrew: 5 stars
2002 Ford F150 SuperCab 2WD: 5 stars
2002 Ford F150 Regular Cab 2WD: 5 stars

2003 Toyota Tundra 4WD: 4 stars
2003 Toyota Tundra 2WD: 4 stars
2002 Toyota Tundra: 4 stars

I suppose all the people on Epinions who rated the Toyota lower than the F150 are full of crap and on emotional tirades as well?

I went to the "New Car & Truck Show" in San Antonio last week. The F150, Titan & Tundra crew cabs were all there. The Tundra was on a turn table & not accessable, but it did look like the "cab" was capable of seating 6 comfortably. The Titan was large inside, but sounded like it was not as insulated. Then the F150 was very impressive & open to sit in and check out. The 6.5' bed is going to be available in the S'crew by the end of the year. Looking at all of them, Ford had it "hands down"! Toyota & Nissan are impressive, compared to recent models, but the FX4 S'crew would be my pick. Just my 2cents, good luck!

retired2001,

It is likely that the main complaint about the Tundra and the reason I suspect it has received a slightly lower rating per the webmaster will all but vanish with the larger cab. I have driven a Tundra twice and both times was underwhelmed with the engine but could live with it. Should I buy a 1/2 ton I am presently leaning towards the FX4 Screw myself. Ford's additional hp/torque is attractive. I still could stretch to a Superduty but am finding it hard to justify with the additional expense since my basic recreational needs could be met by the F-150 or similar.
The idea of having a big diesel beast just sends the blood if you get my drift.
