Any tips for removing the old one with out damaging a 32 year old reservoir? It does not look like it is going to be easy....I tried for a few seconds and the plastic on the pump started to crumble.....Hoping someone has a brilliant idea.

If the pump is starting to crumble....don't stop trying. If your pump has bought the farm anyway you have nothing to loose - it has to come out. These old reservoirs are pretty tough honestly. Dig around the pump with a small screw driver or pick. There's a toothed ring holding the pump in. Gently pry it out. 30+ years of crude around the ring does make you scratch your head wondering how to get it out.
I recently changed mine & had the same problem.........I resorted to pliers with no success other than to partially break up the pump motor.
So I soaked the pump in WD40 or something similar for a while, then used a cigarette lighter to gently heat the plastic surrounding it (a hot air gun would have been better, but at the time, the lighter was what I had).........this worked, & I was able to get the pump out.
