It apppears that the plastic cover for the cable was crimped into that black plastic housing. I’m not familiar with your truck year, but my guess is that the cable was taken from a later model, judging by the accessory plug for ??? Don’t know how you could reattach it....epoxy? You can see the two recesses on the cable cover where the crimps used to hold it. Trouble is...with trans fluid on it, no glue will hold. You can just buy a new cable...not expensive. The gear and C clip should be on the transmission end of the csble just out of the photo view.
The original owner did say that the engine and transmission had been rebuilt, so maybe that's when it was changed? Alternatively he also said he had what he called a functioning crack head working on the truck. So maybe that guy swapped it out to the wrong cable?
Nonetheless, I've got some ideas on how to make it just work. Hose clamps and other ways are coming to mind.
