fun getting 66 home

Went to my Dad's yesterday to get my new 66 F100. Yelled at me because I had a hard time keeping it running, been a long time since dealing with a carb. 4 spd truck tranny, stalled a couple of time. Wife a little worried about going overboard on buying stuff for it. definitely needs some things fixed and updated , however for now it good to have it home.

What are your plans for it? Have you talked with her about it in broad terms*? Is there a budget set aside? You realize that these things can (rightly) be perceived as money pits correct? I mean be realistic nobody needs antique pickup trucks, this is a hobby. A good one, but still just a hobby. Talk everything out beforehand, make sure buying necessary parts isn't a surprise or is stealing money from more important things.

* Boy they hate it when ya call 'em broads!

Good advice. Settle on a budget, then quadruple it, then tear it up and throw it out the window.

More fun with new 66

Actually truck is in real nice condition. This was my dad's favorite toy. Loved old Fords. Always had a few sitting around. At one time had 4 65/66 trucks. He turned 90 and his eyesight has gone and he longer can see to drive safely. Hit parked cars with the t-bird so decided it was time to give up the keys. Mostly needs cosmetic stuff and some wiring rework. Body sits on 70 3/4 4x4 chassis. Truck has been all over the country as he has had 3 different truck campers , a trailer and finally towed a 30 ft 5th wheel. For a man that never got to finish high school (like a lot of his generation) don't think there was anything mechanical that he couldn't fix or repair

Plan your work and work your plan

I agree that developing a plan and a budget are sound ideas.

I never made a budget for my 51 F4. It was a hobby and learning experience, and kept me (literally) off the streets. I paid only $700 for it, but I couldn't drive it. I kept track of every dollar spent on it from gloves and oil to brake components to wheels and tires and tools, etc.

When I sold it to my son, I had over $9,000 in it and over 5 years of labor not included. But I bought it to work on it, so the labor didn't matter.

I paid that much for my 65 F250 because it was almost finished (is it ever?) and I think I will have another $3,000 in it when I'm finished doing all I want to it. But this time, it has been budgeted and I can drive it whenever I choose.

My '66 has a little over $4K in the engine alone. Add another grand for axle work, another grand for the tranny swap, another grand for the T-case and interior, and another grand or two for miscellaneous - I think i'm still just shy of 10K and it's still butt ugly and could use another $5k in body work and paint and I'm going to drop another grand into redoing my axles and possibly another $3K into the engine.

All said and done I'll have over $20K into a truck worth $7500.

What other parts of the 1970 are being utilized? Is the drivetrain from the 1970 as well?

Sounds like a decent truck. Pictures?

Just as an FYI: the frame VIN is typically the only VIN that the DMV and police care about since any door tag can be changed out - or the whole door is sometimes swapped if damaged and the tag isn't.

So, from one perspective your truck is a 1970 and from another it is 1966. What is it titled as? Just curious how your state handles something like that....not that anyone would ever look for that matter.

The title is for the 66 . Drive train is the original 352 from the 66 . Trans and 4wd units from 70. Pics will be posted as soon as I get my son to show me how. Very tech challenged. Maybe that's why I like the old stuff, including steam engines over planes.

Since your Dad did it that will be handy to know where everything came from, for sure.

My Dad is 86 and he is still driving, too. He had a 1970 F250 4x4 crew that he bought brand new. I'm on my way now to pick up some 12" x 18" prints of these 2 so I can frame them for him.

Like your Dad he had a bunch of Ford trucks, too. Tough not to get hooked.
