1986 Instrument Cluster
#16
My ICVR attaches to the ribbon like a 9 volt battery.
For years, every time I turned on my headlights or the HVAC blower motor the oil, gas and temp gauges would all increase. Especially the temp gauge which would go up a good 2 - 3 needle widths.
Eventually I installed this solid state voltage regulator built from instructions posted on this site by Gary Lewis. It helped some but didn’t entirely fix the problem.
NOTICE the big red arrow pointing at the gold colored bolt. IIRC this is the main ground for your cluster and the ground wire for the little solid state voltage regulator attaches to it...
The solid state voltage regulator is adjustable with a little screw driver so I left the wires long so it would hang down and I could adjust it without having to pull the cluster.
Several years later I discovered ground G701 is the common ground for the instrument cluster, dash lights, and HVAC panel illumination but I could never reach it to clean it on account of the aftermarket radio that I haven’t figured out how to remove.
However, about two years ago I finally got the bright idea to splice a jumper ground into the dangly voltage regulator ground wire and that finally did the trick! Gauges are rock steady now.
Here’s a look at G701.
