I just bought a 1977 f150 and I was wondering if there was a diagram for the gauge hook up and if there was a way to tell the gauge backs if they were plastic or the paper back
Are you asking for the pin-out of the rear connector? 1976 is easily available on Fordification, but 1977 is not. However, the cluster printed circuit is simple enough that you can ohm it out with a meter to understand what trace leads where. There's a significant distinction between gauges and lights.
The original cluster was made from composite material that crumbles easily. Look for broken our opened-out bulb mounts. Anything that resembles a 1976 and earlier engineering number would be composite material. Plastic clusters were only available as service replacements, later-model Econolines, or modern aftermarket versions (some of which are nearly translucent).
Honestly I'm not sure I thought there was a lay out for the wiring none of the gauges work and I wanted to pull the cluster but I searched and really didn't get the full explanation. It just an project that I want to get done also did they make a factory half ton high boy?

No, there never has been an F100/150 "highboy".
As for the cluster. First do basic troubleshooting, check the fuses with a voltmeter, check both sides of the fuse.
Is your cluster completely not working? Do any of the gauges work? What about the lights, do they work.
Do you have an ammeter or an idiot light for the alternator, the wiring is different.
If nothing works first make sure the wiring harness is plugged into the back of the cluster.
On the back of the cluster there is an ICVR (instrument cluster voltage regulator) If none of your gauges work (don't include the ammeter, those things rarely work anyway) this could be the problem. The gauges run on ~5.5V not 12V.
The alternator fuel and water temp do not work and I don't believe the speedometer works either, the lights work. I laid on the floor and looked up and seen that the alternator gauge was either unplugged or was I just looking at the back to hold it to the nano board. Also can some one tell me how to carefully remove the cluster?
