Trans Filter

2002 4R100 Reaching 59,000 miles.

Fluid has never been suggested to flush.
Now, Ford says it's time.

Ford wants $140 for the flush, plus $200 if they clean the filter.
The tech says he wouldn't clean the filter, if it was his truck.

Is cold, or hot flush important?

The 4r100 filter has no filetration value at all, it there to help stop big chunks from getting sucked up. Now i change mine ever 30k PLUS i do a complete filter changeout. But my front pump bushings went out at 130k for no reason so who knows, but id drop let the delser do a hot flush and be done with it. 140 bucks is nothing when you figure in buying the oil, laying on your back with fluid dripping in your eyes and all over you.

I agree with the tech about the filter. You really can't clean it, you replace it. But unless the trans has failed it doesn't need to be replaced.

A hot flush is not required for your transmission.

That's an exaggeration. It does filter, but not the very small particles that you can't even see.

If I were you I'd do a drain and fill with that low miles.
You could also use the procedure that Mark K described for a full replacement of fluid. It's pretty easy to do but does require crawling under there.

I bought a ‘03 F-250 with a 4r100 with 118,000 miles on it and I don’t know the maintenance history of the transmission so I bought a Wix filter and was going to drop the pan and change the filter and what fluid I can. Are you saying not to bother with the filter? To just drain what fluid I can through the drain plug and call it good for another 30,000 miles then? Huh....

I'd change it since it's easy and the filter isn't that expensive. I would use motorcraft however.

I recommend changing the fluid with this method: Changing ATF. What you're proposing will change a bit less than half of the fluid.
