AC condenser differences

I have an 86’ F250 that originally had a 6.9 in it. I recently put a 7.3 out of a 93’ truck. So it now has the serpentine belt system on it, with the newer style AC compressor. I’m trying to get the AC working and wondering which parts to buy. The AC condenser in the truck now is shot. My question is, which condenser do I buy? 80-93 shows to have the same part numbers, but should I go with a 94-97 condenser? I will be converting to 134a and I’m thinking the newer style condensers may be different due to not being r12. Correct me if I’m wrong. Thanks for any help!

I would go with the year the body is you are working on.
Is the 94 up a different body style?

94-97 condensers are physically larger and accept different fittings than 80-93 hoses.

But word on the street is that newly made condensers for your specific year don't fit right anyways and might require finagling.

you could probably make a 94-97 condenser work but would require;

94-97 accumulator, 94-97 evaporator and 94-97 hoses, as well as mounting bracket modifications.

With good measurements and some careful planning...don't see why that wouldn't work.

Here is my experience with an aftermarket Spectra brand condenser allegedly designed to fit an '84 pickup:

If you're showing the same part number for '80-93, this is probably what you will encounter.

This is the info I needed to hear. Thanks!

Looks like I’m going to buy everything for a 93’. We’ll see how the condenser fits, hopefully it is actually the same as the 86’ like the part #’s are showing.

i know this a very old thread but how did that go for you? I’m trying to fix the A/C on my 85, the condenser has all kinds of gunk in it

Last time he was on here was 6/25/2021 that is 4 years ago today LOL

Sorry to say any condenser you get will need some work to fit.
I did not look over Karl's link but it may show what I am about to post?

The same part numbers were used for our trucks and the newer ones but is not a direct bolt in with out a little work.
The work is not hard at all.

You bolt the top in just like you would when replacing the part it is the bottom that needs work.
IIRC you have to undo the center grille & hook latch support at the bottom.
I made 3 think 1/2" stand offs using pipe as spacers.
Also found 3 longer bolts 2 for condenser and 1 for the support.
Put the spacer between the radiator support and condenser and bolt it down.
The last spacer is for the center support, spacer between support and radiator and bolt it down.

The rest should go back together like normal.

Definitely check that link. In 2018, when I replaced the condenser, it was a miserable fit. Considerable rework was required. But scroll down to post #15 there and you will see the unit has been redesigned. Supposedly the new version is a much better fit. Be careful, though, because the part number is still the same. The link has pictures of both versions. I would highly suggest purchasing locally so you can open the box and be positive it's the later style before handing over your hard-earned money. No doubt there are plenty of the old style sitting on the shelf, waiting for some unaware buyer. The vendor likely wouldn't know the difference, as the part number is the same.
