I have an 85 Ford E150 with a 302 and an AOE tranny. Today when I was attempting to back out of the parking lot of a 7-11 reverse would not engage. Transmission has been acting up off and on for awhile, when its cold sometimes it'll slip when taking off from a stop but will shift fine once it gets going. Right before reverse went out it started to slip as I was pulling into the parking lot. Theres a bit of a hill and it slipped on the hill so I gave it more gas and it finally kicked albeit a bit violently and even chirped the back tires. I've dealt with no reverse on other cars before wharts strange about this one is it seemed like it was stuck in Drive, like it only had 2 gears, Park and Drive, Neutral wasn't even working, I put in N it still wanted to drive forward.. Weird thing is if I put the selector in Reverse it won't move at all like I couldn't even push it back I had to shut the engine off with it in neutral to finally be able to push it. If it put it in Reverse while the Van is moving slightly forward like 1-2 mph (I wouldn't attempt it any faster) It stops almost like I engaged the parking brake and does not wanna move until I shift it back to drive (sometimes Neutral will actually engage but most of the time its just Park and Drive.. I'm hoping something didn't break in the transmission, At first I was thinking the torque converter or maybe it just overheated (leaks coolant from the engine freeze plugs but thats another story). But then again if that were the case you'd think it would act up in all gears...
Your 85 AOD has a TV rod instead of a cable? (should have unless some changed it) It looks like the old kick down rods on the C6.
Sometimes the bushings will get brittle and break not just at the carb but also down on the transmission..
