Hola amigos,
Its time for a T-case rebuild, and I have it out, on the bench, and mostly apart, but cannot rotate the shift fork enough to get one of the big straight cut gears so I can lift it out through the square hole in the bottom?? I have done this on 3 different T-case rebuilds, but this time, something is holding it from rotating so the gear clears the case enough.
Yes, I have tried moving the shift forks in and out to find the spot where a detent will allow it to rotate... What am I missing??
There is a square head set screw, but no safety wire... so far, I have not been able to get at the square head and remove it.... It is a 7/16" square head, but I have been unable to get a wrench in and apply enough leverage to get it to turn... tomorrow I will try a crow's foot... I have everything out of the T case but still cannot get leverage room enough to loosen the set screw...
I know that I do not have an 8 sided socket.... nor the splined socket, so will have to check some neighbors that may... Thanks Gary, now I have a project for today...
If you have a 7/16" combination wrench here's what I have done in a pinch. Find the deep well socket you have that fits the tightest over the boxed end of the combination wrench. Add an extension in to the deep well socket. Now you have a long extension handle to get more leverage.
Just be careful and watch so the socket doesn't slip off. Or the wrench doesn't slip off the set screw.
Well amigos, thanks for all the support and ideas... I did manage to get the set screw loose, with a 7/16"crows foot, and a long 3/8 extension... the gear is out, the case is clean, and after lunch, it should be going back together. I found NOTHING wrong with any gear, bearing, shaft, spacer or the assembly. I have printed out 2 copies (one landscape for a larger image), and cannot tell if there are 3 springs with detent *****, or only 2. My Xfer case only had 2 each, although there are 3 access ports for 3/8" I/D holes, to hold the springs & detent *****... I have to assume that the 3rd port hole is for access to put in the detent spacer between the to shift rails, and not for a 3rd spring and ball....
Hopefully, someone can clear this minor point up for me....
