You can not get the rear bolts out of the passenger side head while the head is installed.
You could probably double nut the top of the stud and get the rest of them in with the head in place though. But that really defeats the purpose of the studs if the back ones are not installed. Gasket failure is most common on the two back cylinders.
To actually get the best job, you would have to pull the engine out.
You can remove and replace the passenger side head in the truck, but you have to loosen the head bolts and put pieces of fuel line around them to hold them up while removong the head.
Then when you reinstall the head you use the same trick to get it back in.
But since the head is rather heavy and awkward to put in place, you risk either damaging the head gasket or knocking it out of place.
I have changed several engines, if I were doing head work I would pull the engine before I started. But then I am also getting to old to want to lay on top of the engine to work on it long enough to R&R the heads. My 4x4 is to tall to reach it from the outside.
This might seem like a dumb question...when installing head studs, do need you need to pull the heads? If you dont ask, you dont know!
If you are replacing the head bolts with studs you want to replace the head gasket too. I just installed studs in my truck and did the head gaskets too. The head bolts that won't come out while the head is in place can just be pulled up a bit and held in place with rubber bands and do the same installing with the studs. You don't have to double nut the studs since they have a recessed hex slot in the top so you use an allen wrench to tighten the studs.
