Oil pump gasket

I’m replacing the oil pump on my “project truck”. 1996 5.8L. I replaced the gasket between oil pump and inlet tube. The gasket that goes between oil pump and block was torn. I had ordered from Rock Auto so it’s not as easy as going down to local parts store and swapping. Question: Would you even put one back in? I was talking to engine builder friend and he doesn’t put one in unless I wanted to use copper. He says mating surface should be machines close enough and he doesn’t take a chance with paper blowing out and producing air gap. Give me your thoughts please.
