Trailer towing advice

My 93 F-150 I-6 5 speed pulling a car trailer with a Mustang 1400 miles round trip???

Should I get a bigger motored truck? I think that I can make it. But some input would be nice..

The truck has 3.55's

I thing it would be possible but It will destroy the drivetrain in the long run if you don't destroy your clutch on the trip. hills and mountains will tick you off to no end. getting in the slower traffic lane and getting passed by semis. you'll might over heat to thats just a lot of stress to be putting on that truck I'd opt for a bigger motored truck.

Sounds liek it will be close. Don't know the tow rating on a I6 150. At best it might be around 5,000#, check this web site for the tow chart. Wild guess is the Mustang with trailer will be real close to 5,000#.

I would not want to do a lot of towing with that type of rig since it will wear things prematurely and that size rig doesn't have the stability and brakes to do serious towing.

If your 5 speed is the Mazda unit, some guys recommend not using OD since the 5th gear uses a weak gear train to route power thru. It is subject to wear and failure for extended towing.

You need to carefully figure out the truck ratings and the weight of the trailer and all the stuff you will have in the bed and the trailer.

If it was me and if I was right on the edge I would probably try to rent a bigger truck.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

The tow capacity of 300 6cyl with 5sp transmission ranges from 1600lbs to 3600lbs depending on rear end ratio and body style. As stated in the previous posts the 5sp manual transmission is a very light duty model not suitable for towing.

If you like your truck ... don't do it. If you just have a beater that you're willing to abandon and walk away from ... go for it.

IMHO your truck is no more built for towing like this than cresent (adjustable) wrenches are made for driving nails. It works, but not very well.

Ask a friend with a more suitable tow vehicle to help out.
