66 steering colume
Well guys i am trying again i don't know if i am doing this right because i can't seem to get any answers to my threads. any how i have a f 250 1966 c/c c/s and like everybody else i want to move my steering wheel closer to the dash and it's a 4 speed on the floor so all i have to disconnect is the horn and t/s wires take it apart at the rag joint take it loose under the dash and fire wall pull the whole thing out and cut about 3 in off and weld the rag connection back on put it all back thru the fire wall and re connect everything. so can anybody tell me if this sounds possible .thanks guys i hope to hear some input. 2TALL

Thank you Ranger but what all i want is just to change the length of the shaft i have no power wanted. i figure i can take the rag thing off then cut about 3 inches off and put the rag connection back ( if it comes off an on i guess that's my question ) then just slide the whole wheel in to meat the new connection. maybe some one else will see this an make a suggestion. i am new to this site but man i
love it you can find out a lot just by reading other peoples threads still learning how it all works thou so thank you for your thoughts.

I know for a fact the steering wheel end of your shaft is splined. Yes the other end where the rag joint is (the flexible rubber/metal thing that also makes your horn ground when needed) is removable and I know for a fact the shaft coming out of the steering box is splined. I cannot remember if the steering column shaft at the rag joint end is splined. If it is you cannot just cut it off unless you hire a machine shop to cut new splines in. What I was getting at in my previous response is that the steering column shaft for a power steering column is shorter if I recall correctly. You could disassemble the column and swap in the shorter power steering shaft. I hope this helps.

THANK'S GUY'S, Think i got all the info i needed on my steering wheel project . Sorry if i seem a bit slow at this but i am 72 and still trying to get out in the garage and do something and yes got ( SOMETIMERS ) but that not going to stop me. Oh and this computer thing is great if you got a teenager around .but i thing i am doing better at using one finger now i can use one on each hand . ok i am outta here for now ty again and GO FORD

Have a half dozen or so columns sitting next to where I am working in shop today. One of those is on list for me to shorten very soon!
Proper stock distance from bottom of upper collar to mounting bracket is 7.5”. So if all you want to do is make more room up top shorten column between collar and mount. Then for shaft shorten same amount where rag joint goes. There it’s just crimped.
3-3.5” seems to be a good amount to remove.
