I know this has been asked several times and I've read multiple post about converting from manual steering too power, my question is will I have too cut or alter my steering shaft? I purchased a 1979 f100 with power steering and it also has a 3 speed column shift, thanks
I neat trick I ran across somewhere if you don't want to cut the end of the steering column is to flip your original steering wheel over and look at the underside.
There is a metal plate that holds the rubber spacer to the horn ring. The 79 steering shaft is to long and it will hit this metal plate when you try and install your 65/66 horn ring.
Take that metal plate off and drill a hole in it big enough for the excess steering column to pass through, then reassemble.
Mike the 7?-79 Saginaw power steering sets are the same overall length as the 65-66 non power. The difference is the Saginaw gear has hydro connections on top that move the connect point about 2 1/3 in closer to the firewall, making a column swap (easiest) or cutting the shaft necessary.
I run the 76 donor column in my 66. The dash cuff will need to be transferred or longer bolts used.
