I had to ask on the forum what this device was and what it was for. It was marketed as a fuel mileage helper and sludge remover. I was surprised the upper motor was pretty much sludge free when I removed the valve cover for gasket replacement. Does this motor with 115K look good? I started to leave the canister but I removed it. Anyone think it worked? Sandy
I'm not sure but I think that is a bypass oil filter system. If it is then it works in conjunction with your standard oil filter. To find out more click on Oil Guard in the vendor/sponsor list at the top of the forum. It will give you all the information on what they are and the correct way to use them.
FWIW I am going to be installing one on my truck as soon as I save enough to do so. In my opinion they are well worth it.
One went to the PCV valve and the other went to the connection near the vac tree and under it. Now that it's gone the PCV hose will run to that connection. Sandy
That device was a catch can for the PCV system. Not a terrible idea, but questionable for an engine in good condition.
Post 13 has the diagram you need for the six. The hole in the front of the valve cover is fresh air in, sourced from the air box. The hole in back leads to the pcv, which regulates vacuum pulling the fumes out.

I thought I had conveyed that it was the hose from the can that went directly to the PCV valve and the other hose went to the original PCV connection. It was installed by the PO and the can does accumulate sludge. I have no idea how many miles he had when he installed it. It sounded like a good idea when I learned about how it works I am not sure about it passing emissions here. So after I get it inspected I might reinstall it although I don't drive much.
Regular oil changes will keep sludge from the engine. Yours looks pretty clean. If the intake tract is clean(oil free) then that filter was doing its job.
Maybe now with some mileage it might have more blow by and need to help keep oil out of the intake. The motor just burns the fumes, but the oil likely just dries up in the intake tubes.
Intake was very clean. I also think the filter and can was doing its job. The pvc was a motorcraft and made out of plastic. I assume it was original but appeared to be in good shape. Sandy
