I have owned my truck since 22k and now 197k. It as 6.0 trans cooler since 50K. I tow and have never had any Trans issues. I have the trans flushed every 30k but I have never dropped the pan. I know the filter is more a fine screen than it is a filter but I would like to get a look at the pan magnet just for curiosity.
I want to get everything I need before I start and will replace the filter since I am dropping the pan but am I going to need to buy a Pan gasket? Are they reusable after 197k miles?

Well, I think your right. You know what they say about curiosity! I am not having a lick of problem with the trans so I think I will just let it go.
Yeah every 30k might be a bit of a overkill but cheap insurance. My old shop use to charge about $100 for a complete 15qt flush but Ford did it last time and it was a little more $173. Hey, it does have 197k on the trans and going strong....
As I've said before, the 4R100 has gotten a "Bad Rap" in Forums.
The majority of failures are a result of poor maintenance and exceeding the recommended use parameters. I assume your's is still running strong, just as mine with 250k because of Maintenance and non-abuse usage.
If you're curious, the Job is not difficult and can be done in about an hour-and-a-half.
TIP: USE A TORQUE WRENCH on the Pan Bolts! I could have a really nice Lunch if I had a Dollar for everyone I've drilled, tapped, and repaired. And I never did Transmission Work perse'.
What I know about Automatic Transmissions wouldn't fill a Thimble.
17 Qts of Mercon V or equivalent (draining the Torque Converter. I don't know if your's has a Plug or not). Otherwise 10 will do if you're not flushing the system.
1 Filter - There is a Short and Long Stem. I forget what one uses what - perhaps someone can recall. Currently, I forget to pull it out before I pee at my age.
Some sockets and a 1/4" drive Ratchet to check the Torque of internals.

IIRC the "long stem" is for the 4x4 trucks. The pan is a little deeper.

If you do drop the pan I recommend checking the feed bolts. Some might have loosened over the years. I believe you have to drop the valve body to do that though.

That was true with the E4OD. All 4R100s, with the exception of the Lightning, use the deep pan for both 4x2 and 4x4. So if you have a 4R100 get the filter for the deep pan that has the longer pickup tube.

Yes, you do have to remove the valve body to get to the feed bolts.
