steering column issue

steering column issue
I have a 1983 F350 and the steering column where the tilt section of the column meets the rest of the steering column moves really bad, would this be a bushing? I suspect the original owner prior to me used the steering wheel as a handle to get into the truck, and years of pulling on it has done some damage.
Any ideas or advice appreciated.

The casting in the column is probably cracked. Take it apart and check it out, but more than likely you will need a used column from the junkyard to fix it. Take it apart and look at it, may be just some loose bolts but the casting being cracked is common.

There are three or four Allen head bolts that can be accessed when you remove the plastic sleeve below it. If these are loose at all, things can really move around. These bolts are kind of hard to see as they are up in there a ways. You end up almost on the floor trying to see them.

I'm going to guess a big fat person owned it. Like you said, using the steering wheel to get in is a common cause for breakage. Most of them I've taken apart had the pot metal casting broke.
