I tried repainting the timing marks when I rebuilt my distributor last year. I cleaned the area very well, then smeared white paint into the mark recesses let it dry then tried lightly painting dark blue paint over the area, trying not to get any blue paint into the mark recesses. And it turned out ...
Horrible!
So do any of you have any tips or tricks to repainting the timing marks so they look like this:

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I think I will repaint the harmonic damper ring, and scrape a little paint from the engraved recesses and try 95fiveoh's suggestion with one or more of these:
