Hi,
I just joined today. I went through a lot of VIN and certification label code threads but was unable to find how to decode either. I am most interested in the Transmission (whether Mazda or ZF) and in the axle gear ratio. If anyone can decode the VIN and cert label I would appreciate it much. Can you tell the difference between Mazda and ZF by looking at them?
I have a 1994 F150 regular cab 4.9 4x4 1FTEF14Y6RNA83783. The certification label reads
WB "133"
TRANS "M"
AXLE "H9"
TYPE-GVW "F142"
BODY "B64"
TRANS "M"
AXLE "H9"
TAPE
SPRINGS "K I"
When I returned to the post the VIN was hilighted for decoding. When I clicked it said the axle is 3.08 and I couldn't see where the Mazda transmission was mentioned. Why do you say 3.55? Where do you see the Mazda?
Thanks much for the reply. I guess everyone knew that about the ZF but me.. Did all 250/350 5-speeds have them?
Looking at the axle code chart it says H9 3.55 1991. Does that mean 1991 and years following? What does limited slip do? I think I read you have to add something to the grease - what is that?

No, both my '89 and '90 trucks has the same axle code, I suspect the 1991 reference just signifies the source date of the data.

It is a type of differential that limits the amount of slip between both wheels on the axle. A friction modifier additive is used to smooth the gripping action of the clutches contained in the differential.
