VIN codes
Anyone out there have info on reading VIN codes off the bigger trucks? chart that actually listed all of the different drivetrain components, GVW's, etc. I've found this info on the smaller ones, but nothing on the big ones. This could come in handy for anyone looking at one since there are so many drivetrain combinations.
Guy I work with has a F500 dump he is selling for his father-in-law, and asked me what it would have in it.

18,000 GVW
WB = 156
Trans = P
Axle = 44
Somewhere in the 67-72 range

The guestimated date range falls between the info I have, I'll take a swing at it though based on the data I have; F50 (F500) B (6cyl - pending year a 262 or 300) R (San Jose Assembly) E92523 (serial number).
18,000 GVW - is total weight capacity
WB156 is the wheelbase - 156"
Trans P - Warner T19 4 spd
Axle 44 - Rockwell with a 6.80 gear, 13,000# rating
- leaving the front axle at 5,000# which would be about right
Anyone - If I have a code mis-read I am open to correction.

Thanks for the reply. Where have you got your information from? Shop Manual? Internet?

GVW 17990
Trans A
Axle 64
135 B.H.P. racin' engine
I believe the engine to be a 330 MD
Iknow the rear axle is a F-106 Rockwell with 6.80:1 gears (!)
Not sure if the trans is a NP435 of T-19

Most info comes from Ford Part and Accessory catalogs I've picked up along the way in both CD and book form. And sometimes info comes from the internet. If it looks legit and I think it will be of use sometime later I'll save a copy. As others have pointed out in posts, Julies Cool F1 recently I believe, the Part and Accesory catalogs are great reference for their illustrations. They help in assembly, and part identification / application when hitting swap meets or buying parts.
