Windshield Replacement
I am getting my 1977 F150 Ranger XLT back on the road and it needs a new windshield. My truck is the one with all the chrome and I'd kind of like to keep it that way. IIRC there is a chrome strip on or in the windshield gasket. How do I go about getting the windshield replaced without losing that shiny chrome?
Here's another question. When I ordered my new gas tank I assumed it would have the evap emissions hole in the top of the rear tank because I thought by 1977 all vehicles had these. After I dropped the tank I discovered there was no hole. Obviously I should have looked before ordering but I'll work around the issue. Why didn't my truck have evap emissions controls? I thought I saw a charcoal canister under the hood. Will the driver side tank have this hole or not?
Third question. Is it possible to get the headliner back up where it's supposed to be? Mine's sagging.
Thanks,
R.
In terms of the windshield trim strip, you'll need to spec a windshield seal with the required groove. Installers have a special tool to part the gap while simultaneously installing the trim strip. Personally, I would have an installer do it since they have more experience than me... none of my old school vehicles have had it.
Headliner... if it is warped, then replace it. I have had no luck flattening out a warped headliner. Grab some 1/8-inch pressboard, hardboard, or plywood, some automotive grade fabric, and Super77 adhesive. For a little detail, considering laying down some 1/8-inch open cell foam before applying the fabric. Want more? Okay, after adhering the fabric, measure out a pattern and install metal or plastic buttons and securely tie them off on the back softly "pillow" the surface... Shiny small chrome buttons or discs would be cool in my opinion.
But the weatherstrips are not the same.
Two different types of windshield reveal mouldings used in 1977. The weatherstrip must match whatever mouldings are in place.
1977's before serial number O80,001 and 1973/76's have stainless steel reveal mouldings. D3TZ-1003110-E .. Windshield Weatherstrip / Reproduced
1977's from serial number O80,001 and 1978/79's have a one piece flexible plastic chrome reveal moulding. D7TZ-1003110-B .. Windshield Weatherstrip / Reproduced

The "missing" hole in the fuel tank would be for the fuel vapor valve used with Evaporative Emission.
I don't know of anyone that repro's a tank with this hole.
While Evaporative Emission was installed in most vehicles sold new in CA (possibly in other states), the Feds didn't mandate it until 1979.
I have read that members on here have ordered it with that hole. One guy just said he ordered it by mistake.
X2 on take the head liner down and replace the board with HIO suggestion. If you have the vinyl covering it and it is sagging, clean off all the old dead foam on the vinyl and clean the headliner board. Get Force Field Headliner adhesive from JoAnns.

And or there is a cross member right in line with the mirror and dome light, I have seen a short sheet metal screw used to hold the headliner back up using the metal cross member as a place to attach. I have also seen velcro attached to the cross member.
The headliner will have to wait until I have more time.
Re: evaporate emission holes - EVERYONE is reproing tanks with holes and tanks without.
Thanks!

1967/77: The serial number (last 6 digits of the VIN) is a letter followed by 5 numbers, so 81328 doesn't tell anyone anything.
302 & 460: The fuel pump bolts to the left (drivers) side of the timing cover.
351M/400: The fuel pump bolts to the left side of the block, its bolt pattern is at 6 & 12 o'clock.
Yes, I know where the fuel pump is supposed to be. The problem is I cannot see it, hiding behind the power steering pump. I was hoping someone could tell me the best way to access it. From the bottom or remove the PS pump and go in from the top? It's been cold and rainy and I don't like crawling around in wet sand under the truck unless I have to.

And I know I don't have power steering I have the power assist or whatever it's official term is

With Power Assist, the manual steering gearbox is used, because it has nothing to do with the Power Assist.
M Block, FE or other....get #1 slug to TDC....remove the bolt/nut and accoutrements. Remove the pump by lifting up and out.
By having #1 piston at TDC it's waaay easier to get the pump arm under the eccentric and you won't be inventing new words as you go along.
Be sure to put some engine break-in goop/grease/heavy oil on the new arm before install.
"Installation is the opposite of removal." Hahahaha...couldn't help myself. How many times have we seen that little helpful tip?
