New to Ford and have noticed a whirring sound when I'm in 4 wheel drive coming from the driver's side wheel. It is definitely more pronounced at slower speeds and when coasting. On some trucks I've had, being in 4 wheel is sometimes associated with a bit more noise but this seems more than normal. Is this normal for Fords? Probably will have someone look at it but wanted to know what others thoughts are before. 2017 SD 350 with 16K on it.
I noticed a very similar sound on mine the first time I used 4wd on roads (snow packed or icy). I have had several super duties before so I took it in. They drove a few other new ones and they all did it. The dealer believed it was something to do with the new transfer case design, he thought it was the sound of the chain drive inside being more audible than on previous generations.

Do you have the manual shifting? or the Electronic Shift on Fly dial?
If I recall the manual correctly the ESOF still has the hub which can be switched between locked and auto. Reading your post, if it were me I'd check the hub first. There is a picture of the hub selector on page 210 of the 2017 Super Duty manual.
Normal warbling sounds of the u-joint in the front end. Its not a quieter CV joint like in small SUVs and cars, and GMC/Chevy front end. I have heard it since 1978 in my 1/2 ton regular cab, step side, through 2000 SD F-350, 2005 SD F350, now 2017 F-350. I do long trips in 4*4 all the time, its pretty consistent and most noticeable when your on the throttle, and there is traction.
New to Fords as well. My 2017 F350 has the same noise in 4H on snowpack at speed/throttle. Unsettling, but good to see it is possibly "normal." Its documented with Ford just in case...
2017 F250 Platinum. Mine does the exact same thing. It was driving me CRAZY until I figured out what it was. It totally goes away in 2WD. Normal, I am not sure. But I have read a lot of people have it. Now that I know what it is, it doesn't bother me much anymore.
