Not a backup camera

I can't count how many times when I would like to "turn on" the backup camera when I tooling down the road. The primary time would be when we are towing our TT, and we hit a patch of rough pavement, and I just want to "take a look" as it were (or is). However, there are the other occasional times when I would like to take a look with a field of view that is a bit better than the rear view mirror(s).

Is there some simple add-on or mod that would allow me to "enable" the backup camera, even though I'm not actually backing up?

While it’s not integrated into the factory system, this one allows you to use your phone. It looks pretty cool and easy to install. http://www.rearviewsafety.com/backup...ra-system.html

Well you could shift into reverse while going down the road to enable the back-up camera.

Not that I am saying do it, but it would work and the computers know not to engage reverse while moving forward to avoid damaging anything.

Check out this one:

https://www.coastaletech.com/mytouch2.htm

It's been talked about on the Super Duty forum for awhile now. I haven't done much research on it, but I think it would enable this for you.

I don't know if I'm brave enough to try that. Wonder what gear the computer would switch you to?

That looks interesting. It looks like it might work for a TT backup camera as well. The only question is if it would actually work on my 2015 F-150 without mytouch.

I would expect it to stay in neutral, since you’ll pass through neutral on the way to reverse. My logic is based on knowing it will shift into neutral while moving at any speed. So, my theory is that it will stay in neutral and not engage reverse.

I’m too scared to try it. If anyone else wants to, be sure to record it!

Why don't you test that theory on your truck and let us know if the PCM prevented it from going into reverse.

I have accidentally slipped a few times into "R" while intending to go for "N" coasting down very long hills. It didn't do anything. But I don't recall the rear camera activating. I'll try it again.

Has anyone tried Lockpick on a 2015/16/17 F-150? Their website lumps 2013-2015 into the same group, which does not inspire confidence.

Someone posted a video on YouTube of putting a f150 in reverse while moving, nothing happens and the rear camera did come on.

I sent an email to CoastalTech, and they said the built-in camera has a lockout that turns power off to the camera above 15 MPH.

They did say you can add a 2nd or 3rd camera to get a rear view while moving.

I have my rearview camera set to have the delay. It stays on until you hit approx 15 mph. That might be what they are talking about.
