Hi all,
First time posting here. I have a 93 F150 XL with the 4.9L, M5OD R2 trans.
The concentric slave on the clutch went out, as usual. Replaced the slave, pilot bearing, pressure plate, flywheel and disc. The new slave cylinder has the throwout bearing already attached. I get everything buttoned up and the new clutch feels great.
Problem is, the new clutch squeals loudly when the trans is engaged. Really loudly. I have seen this kind of squealing as a sign that the throwout is bad, but again, the throwout is brand new as well.
Makes a slight chirp occasionally when clutch is first depressed, but then goes silent.
Any chance it's something besides a faulty throwout? I haven't done a clutch job before, but everything seemed pretty run of the mill.
Should the throwout be making constant contact with the fingers on the pressure plate?
Is there anyway to grease it or replace the throwout without having to drop the trans again?
Thanks for the advice, this is a really great, informative forum community.
Bearing would be my guess, unfortunately. I recently undertook the same project and did not have a squeal. Maybe it'll quiet down after everything breaks in a little bit?
If I understand you it squeals when the clutch pedal is UP? Does it squeal with the truck sitting still in neutral as well as when you are driving?
If so I would say the squealing is in the transmission rather than the throwout bearing or the pilot bearing.
That's correct. When the trans was out I did have a shop replace one of the shift forks and replace a pin in the shifter. I though it was something I had messed up, not them. I'll have them take a look and post updates

That was my first thought. I'll probably take it to the trans shop and let them look. I'd be pretty disappointed if it's the new bearing.
If it was the throwout bearing it would likely squeal loudest when the clutch pedal was pushed down, that is when it's doing it's work pushing on the pressure plate. There seems to be some controversy as to whether or not the throwout bearing is turning when the clutch pedal is up. I have seen claims that the throwout bearing does turn when the clutch pedal is up so it doesn't have a sudden engagement when the clutch pedal is pushed down. I don't know the answer to that.
Just for the record it wouldn't be the pilot bearing because everything associated with it is turning together when the clutch pedal is up.
The throwout bearing spins all the time in these trucks, it actually helps reduce wear on the bearing.
Yeah, that's what I was seeing when I looked through the inspection window. Other than the squeal, everything feels really great with the clutch. At least when I redo it all the bolts will be broken free...
I gotta say, the more I think about it the less I think it's the throwout bearing. I'm starting to think it's in the transmission. Haven't gotten a chance to get it back to the trans shop yet.
When I replaced the trans I filled it with Dexron/Mercon, because the manual spec is Mercon. ShouShou have used Mercon V? Maybe that's the issue?
So talked to the guy at the trans shop, he is saying that he thinks the input bearing is bad. Or possibly that the pilot is bad or cocked a little bit. What is involved in replacing the input bearing? Is I it something i can manage at home or will I need to have it pressed?
