352 no start

So I replaced the cam, lifters, timing chain set, plugs wires, and got a 4bbl carb and intake. Trying to break in the new cam and lifters and I can't get it to start. I've already been through carb. I've checked distributor timing a couple times and think I got it right. Some times it'll fire up a couple seconds, other times it'll spit and sputtet, and sometimes it backfires through carb, and other times nothing. I don't want to turn it over too much without it running because of new cam. What could be going on?

Timing is the issue. You changed a lot of parts though. Is your valve lash set correctly? I do not know off the top of my head if they are adjustable or torque 'em down hydraulic. Cylinder numbering starts on the passenger right bank with number 1. Timing is both ignition and valve.

The valves are non-adjustable on most FE engines. The rocker arm shafts simply torque down and assuming valve installed height, pushrod length etc. are correct then the inner plunger of the hydraulic lifter should be somewhere between the top and bottom of it's range of self adjustability. One common mistake when reassembling engines is to get a spark plug wire connected to the wrong cylinder. Run through the firing order and make sure the wires are routed correctly. Also sometimes a distributor cap that has carbon tracks inside of it between a couple of the terminals will cause a stray, incorrectly timed spark. Make sure the point gap is close to specs. Basics just need to be reviewed here.

Pop off the dist cap, turn over the engine and make sure you have the wires in the cap oriented the same direction as the rotor is turning. It's easy to not be thinking and wire the plug wires clockwise and the distributor turning counter-clockwise.

After checking this, make sure you are on TDC, compression stroke and check that #1 plug wire is where the rotor is pointing. Passenger side is from front to back, 1 2 3 4, Driver side front to back, 5 6 7 8. The firing order is stamped onto the intake if your intake is factory.

If points, condenser, rotor, and cap are all good, it should start.

to find tdc on the compression stroke, pull #1 plug, stick your finger in the plug hole, and tap the key until you get pressure, then turn the engine by hand until you line up the "tdc" or "0" mark on the balancer.
