Typically that’s a misalignment issue. Double and triple check on assembly. I had the same problem before and That was the issue.

You’re pushing the torque converter all the way as far as it goes in the transmission before you try to install it?

Ensure the both the face of the transmission and the back of the block are clean.

There should be alignment dowel where 2 of the bolts go from the transmission to the block. Those have to be able to go into the matching holes.

All the bolts must be in from the transmission to block and properly torqued.

When you install the torque converter to flex plate bolts the converter should be free to spin and naturally come in contact with the flex plate. If you are pulling the converter to the flex plate with the bolts there’s an obstruction.

Have you changed engines or converted from manual to automatic?
Ok. I will double check all of those. The engine was changed out but that has been maybe 10 years ago. I did find one bolt missing that holds the tranny to the engine. I need to find one of those.
One thing that concerns me is that when I changed engines, someone else done it for me. I bought a new flex plate and Im sure that the center spacer was a two piece type that sandwiched the flex plate in between them. It actually had to be pressed on. I did that myself. The original flex plate wasnt broke but did have a few teeth missing. When the first one broke, I replaced it myself but that center piece wasnt the same. It has a reinforcement ring that fits up against the flex plate and the bolts go throught it and the plate. It didnt register till it broke again and then i noticed the center was different. I have not been able to find anything that lists a center like the one that was there the first time. I dont know why the mechanic would change something like that. That was quite a few years ago and he is no longer in business.
