I’m getting ready to replace my timing chain on my 400. If I get a set that has +4, 0, -4 where do I set it to be “straight up” and take the factory emissions retard out of the cam? I’ve looked around but I can’t seem to find out an easy answer to it.
Yes that would be correct. Would you also be putting in a bigger cam?? That will wake up your 400.
Nope, I just picked up a 78 460 out of a F-350 2wd with 54,000 original miles that I’ll be putting in this summer. The 400 is only staying till then but it needs a timing chain.
Where do you live, its not in your signature? I may be in the market for a 400 if its not a "cracker".
As said before, straight up is 0. I did this job about a year ago, not too bad as long as all of your water pump studs come out, mine where a bit rusty and I broke 2. The water pump studs are all different lengths, so make sure you keep them in order. My biggest alternator bolt wouldn't come out without cutting it off either.

I’m in Utah. I’m going to hang on to that 400 and try to find my daughter a 78-79 F-150 roller to build with her, she gets her permit in November and she loves my 78 more than my 11 Ecoboost.

My youngest son is twelve and I'm looking to do the same thing. He's very mechanically inclined and would LOVE to build up his first vehicle. His older brother has a 78 F-150 and I have a 78 Bronco - he wants to "join the club"!

I always just look for it in the upper right hand part of the post. I know how to get to profiles, just didn't realize that it would be in the profile but not show on his posts, my bad.
